05/05/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
05/05/16 13:32 BASIC INFO Kovu A1072559 is an approximately 1 year old American Pitbull Mix. He is being surrendered to the shelter due to pet conflict. Owner has 2 other dogs and Kovu is not getting along with them. Kovu is super friendly and sweet with people. He just does not get along with certain dogs. The dogs he lived with were his Mom and Brother. Kovu allows you to take away his food bowl water bowl or toy away. He does bark if an unfamiliar approaches the backyard or door. For exercise he would be allowed to run loose in a back yard. He is house trained and prefers to go on cement. He is fed dry food any brand. He listens to the commands sit and stay. He slept inside of a crate. BEHAVIOR DURING INTAKE Kovu had loose body, wiggly tail and took treats gently from Counselor.
05/07/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Perhaps named after the son of Scar from The Lion King, our Kovu is a gorgeous gray who loves meeting new people, has awesome leash manners, and is a total delight with whom to spend time. Surrendered by his family of humans because he wasn’t getting along with his canine mother and brother, it proves the adage that sometimes ‘family’ should be we choose of our own free will. We’re told that Kovu is “super friendly and sweet with people”, doesn’t guard his stuff, is housetrained, and slept inside of his crate. Kovu loved laying his head in my lap for some petting, didn’t mind being tethered for pictures, and loved, loved, loved playing with some tennis balls, nosing one around the pen, chasing after another and trying to figure out how to make two balls work. Kovu has deep, intelligent and soulful eyes and what struck me most about him was how gently focused he seems – as if he understood every word I was saying and totally empathized with me. He’s amazing. In his first group play he engaged in running play, and when we were out on the street he seemed interested in meeting others. I fell in love with this awesome dog who seems calmer and wiser than his age indicates. He’s waiting for his new person or family to walk in the door, meet him and say, “You’re coming home with me.” Will you be that lucky person?
05/08/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Kovu came into our center due to pet conflict with two other dogs in the home (his mother and littermate), owner states Kovu is selective and does not get along with certain dogs but is super friendly and sweet with people. It is reported Kovu isn’t bothered if anyone touches his Food, Toys, Treats. Owner reports Kovu is housetrained and prefers to go on cement, is crate trained and sleeps inside his crate. During intake, Kovu had a loose body, took treats gently, allowed all handling. Kovu pulled on leash for his relief walk. He was friendly and sociable upon entering SAFER assessment room. Kovu allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands during Look item, soft. He leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, mouth open. Kovu was playful but a bit distracted during Tag game, settled very easily at end. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Kovu kept a firm grip on Toy, loose body. When off leash with other dogs Kovu engages in some running play. The Behavior Team feels Kovu would do well with an Experienced adopter. Any other dogs in the home will require a slow approach/in depth interaction. Kovu may benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, and play to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Playful, a bit distracted Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip, body loose Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Kovu engages in some running play
05/06/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Kovu engages in running play with female dogs- with intent to mount. He has not yet been introduced to a male while in our care, howeber does come with owner surrender notes citing conflict with other dogs in the home, and also cites that “he just does not get along with certain dogs.”- no further detail was provided. Based on the aforementioned observations, the behavior department recommends that Kovu be the only resident dog in a home until his behavior with them outside the shelter can be followed up on via positive reinforcement and slow introdcutions. When off leash with other dogs Kovu engages in some running play but is more interested in mounting. 5/9 update: Kovu offers bows and barks to solicit play. He begins to attempt to mount when play slows down.
