11/02/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I had to look it up, but Kotka is the name of a city in Finland. It’s also Finnish for “Eagle.” Coincidentally, her butterfly wings are quite apropos! Well at least they’re both creatures that fly, anyway. Brought in as a stray, Kotka was friendly with her finders, and even seemed housetrained. With me, she walked nicely on the leash, was calm when passing other dogs outside, but inside got a little excited, and was quick to do her “business.” Though Kotka was found as a stray, she has had some training, and knows “sit,” “down,” and “give paw.” She’s food motivated too, so I am sure that she can learn a bunch more tricks. Kotka is a sweet girl, looking for her new “nesting” grounds. Could it be with you? Ask to meet her today.

Kotka was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Kotka displays stiff body language and barks when greeting novel dogs. She requires a muzzle in order to enter the pen and immediately lunges on top of the other dog. Due to the reactivity towards other dogs seen here at the Care Center, the Behavior Department recommends that Kotka be the only dog in the household. 10/26: Kotka displays stiff body language and begins barking at the novel male dog. A muzzle is placed on her. She briefly greets the male dog before lunging towards his back as he runs away.
