01/10/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: True to her name, Kookie is a little bit off beat, maybe even a bit silly. Her previous owner surrendered her saying she was too energetic to keep up with. Kookie looks a lot like some sort of hunting dog, her adorable spots and tail are reminiscent of a Pointer and when she saw some birds, she nearly pointed at them! Her nose is constantly to the ground, picking up the stories of the animals who had walked there before her. And though I wouldn’t quite call her hyper, Kookie would probably do well in an active home, one that can nurture her natural desire to explore! She walks nicely on the leash, sits for treats and passes other dogs with a wagging tail. At one point, we sat down together, and she sprawled herself across my lap, giving me the most gentle kisses as we relaxed. We looked so content, a fellow volunteer had to make his way over to us to let us know just how cute of a sight we were making! Kookie is already spayed and ready to go to her forever home, so ask to meet her at the Brooklyn Care Center today!
01/08/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Kookie previously lived with two adults, one dog and a cat. The owner stated Kookie is playful towards the other dog and cat; she would chase the cat around the home. The owner mentioned Kookie is mostly housetrained, has a high activity level. It was reported by the owner Kookie will growl with tense body language and hackles up when her food bowl is touched; she would only allow the owner to touch her food bowl. The owner stated when Kookie is home alone she will cry and destroy items in the household. At intake it was reported Kookie was energetic with loose body posture, she allowed all handling. During SAFER Kookie came in to the assessment room loose and wiggly, she was friendly and social towards the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Kookie joins the game during the tag interaction and during the resources portion of the assessment Kookie was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Due to some concerns stated from the previous owner Kookie growls and guards her food bowl when being touched, the behavior department recommends an experienced adopter with no children who are comfortable with providing positive reinforcement behavior modification to address the food guarding seen in the home setting. In addition to food behavior modification protocol we recommend teaching Kookie “Drop It” and trade-up games. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the toy, and she is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Kookie still enters the pen with very high energy, rushing the other dog. She becomes frustrated when another dog does not respond to her solicitations and barks in their face.
06/07/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Kookie is playful and is initially forward and pushy when playing but smooths out as she gets to know her partner. She enjoys rough and rowdy play- running chase, body slams and fencing. Kookie appears to have mild barrier frustration that is expressed when she greets another dog either on leash or through a fence. This behavior will very likely appear in a new home while she is on a leash or if she is fenced in a yard and will be something that needs to be modified with appropriate positive associations and proper impulse control training. 6/7 Update Kookie engages in rough and rowdy play with a social female and is social with a wagging tail when greeting at the gate 6/8, 6/9 Update Kookie will bark with apparent excitement when greeting other dogs at the gate and is highly excited to interact. When she is in the yard with other dogs, she engages in rough and rowdy play 6/10, 6/11 Update Kookie continues to bark at other dogs when greeting at the gate but when in the yard she is playful and plays well with both males and females. 1/6 update: Kookie is a hypermovtivated player but still barks when greeting another dog through a barrier and on leash. She enjoys high energy play- running, body slams and fencing- with another dog. She also takes appropriate breaks to slow things down. 1/7 update: Kookie still enters the pen with very high energy, rushing the other dog. She becomes frustrated when another dog does not respond to her solicitations and barks in their face.
