I am a neutered male black poodle min mix. The shelter thinks I am about 4 YEARS old.

I came in the shelter as a RETURN on 11/29/2016 from NY 11374, owner surrender reason stated was BITEPEOPLE.

11/29/2016 Exam Type VACCINATE – Medical Rating is 1 – NORMAL , Behavior Rating is NONE, Weight 23.2 LBS.

11/29/16 13:17 Kody is a four year old neutered black poodle mix. He was adopted from ACC and was with his owner for about a month. Kody was surrendered by his owner due to behaviors he began to display in the home over the last few weeks. Owner stated he became protective and began to lunge at strangers. Kody has lived with one adult in the previous home. Kody is described as friendly around strangers and will seek attention. He will wag his tail and approach them. Kody has not been around children, cats or dogs while with his previous owner. Kody has a bite history. Kody is not bothered when his food is touched while eating, owner stated Kody was pet while eating and was hand fed. When Kody has a toy or treat he will guard the toy. Owner stated his body will stiffen and he will growl, he will snap if you continue to approach. He loves to be bathed and brushed. Owner stated over the last few weeks Kody’s behavior has begun to change towards strangers. According to owner he will bark and growl if a stranger approaches his home or the owner. Owner stated he became very protective and will lunge and growl. He will have a stiff body and will snap. Kody is described as a confident and affectionate dog. He has a medium activity level and loves to play with squeaky and stuffed toys. Owner stated he will destroy the stuffed toys very quickly. He has been kept only indoors. Kody is housetrained and was walked twice a day, owner stated he will also use pee pads in the home as well. Kody pulls hard on leash and owner stated will lunge as well. Kody eats Wellness brand wet food and eats half a can twice a day. He loves sweet potato and lamb jerky. Kody knows the command sit. Upon intake Kody was tense and hide underneath owner. Counselor proceeded slowly and was able to collar, he stiffened but allowed handling. Counselor was able to scan (negative) and collar.

KNOWN HISTORY: Altered, Return Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Unknown. FG/RG: Will stiffen, growl, and snap when approached when he has a toy or treat. Bite history: Kody has bitten two people but did not break skin. One instance was the owner’s adult daughter who went to pet him and he bit her lip. The other instance was a bite to a friend that was entering the home. Housetrained: Yes, will go outside and on pads. Energy level/descriptors: Confident and affectionate with a medium activity level. Other notes: Kody will lunge and growl at people while on leash. Upon intake Kody was stiff but allowed handling. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/30/16 Look: 5. Dog growls and snaps. Toy: 3. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff. Summary: Kody growled and snapped repeatedly when his face was touched during look. Other tactile portions of the assessment were skipped. He became stiff during toy. Kody should be placed with a New Hope partner who is able to work with his behavioral issues. PLAYGROUP: Kody was brought in as a stray so his past behavior around other dogs is unknown. When off leash at the Care Center, Kody is social and displays bouncy body language when interacting with other small dogs. He may attempt to mount male and female dogs but is able to listen to corrections from other dogs and explores the pen. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/29/16 During his initial medical exam Kody appeared a little nervous and timid but tolerated all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner (Kody would benefit best from placement with a New Hope rescue group who can further assess this behavior in a stable environment) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Kody has been observed to snap when startled or approach when a toy/food item is in his possession. It is recommended that Kody be allowed a proper time to decompress to aid in acclimating to a new environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Bella to new and unfamiliar situations.) _X_Resource guarding (Kody may require positive reinforcement behavior modification to address this guarding behavior. In addition to behavior modification protocol we recommend teaching Kody “Drop It” and trade-up games.)

When off leash at the Care Center, Kody is social and displays bouncy body language when interacting with other small dogs. He may attempt to mount male and female dogs but is able to listen to corrections from other dogs and explores the pen. 10/9- 10/19: Kody is social and greets other small male and female dogs but mostly keeps to himself while exploring the environment. 10/13: Kody attempts to mount male and female dogs but is able to listen to corrections from other dogs and explores the pen. 11/30: Kody displays social and bouncy body language when interacting with other small dogs.
