Koa likes to play with rope toys, balls, and kongs. He likes to play fetch and tug. He was kept mostly indoors and slept on the floor by owner’s son’s bed. He was fed Blue Buffalo dry dog food. Owner filled up a large bowl once a day. He is house-trained and will go potty anywhere. When left home alone he was always left inside a crate. He has never been left in a yard alone. He knows commands sit, come, stay, and go home means get inside crate which he does. For exercise owner takes him running on a leash. He pulls very hard and he is never walked off the leash. 12/11/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Unaltered, Owner surrender Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward children: Snap/lunges Behavior toward dogs: Lunges/barks Behavior toward cats: Unknown FG/RG: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Affectionate, independent, and anxious with a very high activity level. Other notes: Growls, lunges, and snaps at strangers. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 12/11/16 Summary: Due to the behavior demonstrated in the shelter the behavior department believes that Koa is not an appropriate candidate for SAFER at this time. Koa is displays high levels of anxiety in the assessment room, he would whine and pull away from the assessor when trying to coax her. Koa make attempts to increase distance from handlers and head flipped upon direct contact. A SAFER assessment will not be conducted due to safety and stress level concerns. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with female dogs Koa is polite and tolerant. He may follow the other dogs while they play and stay near them, but will not engage himself. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/08/16 During initial exam Koa appeared to be very tense and nervous. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner (Due to the fear/avoidance behavior displayed in the care center, we cannot fully evaluate Koa and feel that he will be best set up to succeed through placement with a New Hope partner. We recommend only positive reinforcement-based, force-free training for Koa as aversive methods are likely to heighten fear and increase aggression.) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Koa has been observed to display fearful behavior during his stay at our care centers; at times will avoid interaction and shy away from direct-touch. Koa easily startles and is made uncomfortable by loud noises and sudden movement and will display proper warning signals as well as increase distance from anything that may present a threat. We cannot be certain if any other behavior is suppressed as a result of his environment. A period of decompression is advised before introduction or exposure to new and unfamiliar situations. Force-free, reward based training is advised.) _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration (See known history)
