04/13/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: It’s hard to imagine that someone could tie up this lovable blockhead and abandon him but that’s just what happened to KJ. Thankfully, a good Samaritan was able to scoop him up and provide him some protection until he could safely get to us. I can only imagine that KJ was quick to win his finders over with his devilishly good looks, the way he snorts when he gets a good snack, and how he loves to play fetch by throwing the ball back to you with his mouth! And that’s not all that KJ has to offer. He appears to have some housetraining, LOVES to cuddle (after he’s burnt off some of his puppy energy) and knows some commands. When I asked him to sit, he got into position, but was careful not to put his bum on the ground since it was wet from the rain. What a smart boy! It seems the only thing KJ is missing is you! Ask to meet him today.
03/29/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 3/27/17 Unaltered male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 3/29/17 Look: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1: 3. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff. Summary: KJ was friendly and social towards the assessor. He allowed all handling during his assessment. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, KJ displays soft and bouncy body language when interacting with female dogs. He was not introduced to a male dog at this time. KJ was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that KJ be placed with dogs that match his gentle play style. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 3/27/17 KJ allowed all handling during his initial medical exam. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on KJ so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience(Suitable for an adopter with previous dog experience) Especially with the behaviors underlined below. _X_No young children (under 5): Due to potential resource guarding behavior. In the care center, KJ gave an appropriate warning of his discomfort (freezing) but we feel that young children may not know to respect this warning. Older, dog savvy children can be considered as long as the adults feel confident that KJ can be left alone while eating so she does not need to escalate from a freeze. Behavior modification for resource guarding behavior can be found at aspcapro.org. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: KJ has been observed to become stiff when engaged with a toy item, though no further escalation; we cannot be certain if this behavior will appear in a home environment though recommend safe and appropriate management if it does.
