10/30/16 17:02 Basic information Kj is a 5 year old male Akita mix with no known medical conditions. Owner has had Kj for 5y ears and is surrendering because they moved to a private facility that does not accept pet. Socialization Kj has lived with older children ages ranging from 15 and up. KJ played gently with everyone when he does play. Around strangers Kj is friendly and outgoing. KJ has not lived with cats or other dogs. Around female dogs Kj is playful. Around male dogs Kj will smell them but if there together for too long or if another dog starts barking at him he will bark back at them. If KJ sees cats outside he will chase them. Behavior During storms and fireworks KJ is scared and will hide. KJ isn’t bothered when having his food bowl touched or having toys and treats taken away. KJ Doesn’t like getting bathes but will sit there for you and let you wash him./ KJ doesn’t go on the furniture at home. KJ enjoys being brushed but has never had his nails trimmed. When someone unfamiliar approaches the yard KJ will bark until the owner tells him to stop. For the new family to know KJ was described as friendly independent and social with a medium to high activity level. KJ Likes to play with bones. When home with KJ he usually likes to keep to himself. KJ stays mostly outside and is only in the house a couple hours a day. Kj eats Alpo dry food twice a day. KJ goes on one to two walks a day. He is house trained and is use to going to the bathroom on grass. KJ pulls lightly on the leash sometimes and when off the leash will stay close to your side. KJ is well behaved when left in the yard alone. KJ knows the commands sit, down, come, stay, and paw. Behavior during intake During intake KJ was relaxed and quiet. He laid down on the floor and when counselor approached he greeted them with a loose body. KJ allowed to be collared with no problem and enjoyed being pet.

Around female dogs KJ is playful. Around male dogs KJ will smell them but if they’re together for too long or if another dog starts barking at him he will bark back at them. Behavior toward cats: Attempts to chase outdoor cats FG/RG: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: KJ was described as friendly independent and social with a medium to high activity level. Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/01/16 Summary: KJ is highly sensitive to handling and tolerates very minimal forms of touch. KJ stands tall, makes direct eye contact and displays all appropriate warning signals indicating he is uncomfortable. KJ is not an appropriate candidate for an assessment at this time, he would benefit best from placement with a New Hope rescue. PLAYGROUP: According to KJ’s previous owner, around female dogs Kj is playful. Around male dogs Kj will smell them but if they are together for too long or if another dog starts barking at him he will bark back at them. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, KJ displays soft body language as he socializes with a novel female dog. He is slightly sexually motivated but does not attempt to mount the female dog as he explores the pen. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 10/31/16 During his initial medical examination, KJ tolerated very minimal handling; growling upon direct touch. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13)(See potential challenges) _X_Place with a New Hope partner (KJ has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and tolerates minimal forms of touch/interaction, for this reason along with known history, we believe KJ would benefit best from placement with a New Hope rescue group who can further assess this behavior in a stable environment.) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (KJ has displayed fearful/defensive behavior during his stay at our care centers, tolerating very minimal handling. It is recommended that KJ be allowed a proper time to decompress to aid in acclimating him to a new environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing KJ to new and unfamiliar situations.)
