Kirk
Hello, my name is Kirk. My animal id is #14875. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 29-Nov-2017.
Kirk is at risk for behavioral reasons, he is very fearful and not coping in the shelter. We have no medical concerns for Kirk, he is an apparently healthy dog.
My medical notes are…
Weight: 68 lbs
visual exam only s/o: growling, staring at examiner, motionless coat is clean no sign of uri unable to see teeth a: apparently healthy p: no treatment
Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 4. Orange
Date of intake:: 11/29/2017
Spay/Neuter status:: Yes
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray
Other Notes:: While at the care center, Kirk has been unable to be safely removed from his kennel, freezing and growling when approached. For this reason, he is not a good candidate for a handling assessment.
Date of assessment:: 12/3/2017
Date of intake:: 11/29/2017
Summary:: Kirk became tense, barked at the counselor, and did not allow handling.
Date of initial:: 11/29/2017
Summary:: Kirk was tense, growling, and snapping.
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Kirk so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Kirk is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Kirk appears fearful at the care center and has been unable to be safely removed from his kennel. At intake, he barked and growled at handlers. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Kirk appears very fearful at the care center, freezing and growling at handlers that approach him. At intake, he growled and barked at handler. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Kirk to new and unfamiliar situations.
