07/06/2017 WEB MEMO
I met King while he was calmly and patiently waiting in the lobby. I was taking a dog out, and although the dog I had with me got excited over seeing another dog, King remained calm and cool. I met King again later that day. I kept him company in the hallway while his kennel was being prepared. He was a curious gent, sniffing here and there, pulling towards objects that he wanted to investigate. He seemed to take his new environment in stride, and was properly friendly with the other staff members who would come up to greet him or chat with me. I am sure that he has a playful and excitable side to him, but at that moment, he was just checking out his new digs and these new peeps. He is still a young lad, so an active household with time to play would be the perfect palace for this King.

Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: King displayed a level of jumping, mouthing with moderate to hard pressure, and leash biting during his assessment. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Summary INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, King was social. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/5/17 During his initial medical exam, King was social and active, but struggled and growled when restrained. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on King so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, he has been active and enthusiastic. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when she becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No children (under 13): Due to how mouthy and jumpy King is, we recommend an adult only home. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Social hyper-arousal: King became quickly over aroused during tag, jumping up high and leash biting. We recommend positive reinforcement, force free training to teach King to remain calm in the presence of excitement by rewarding him for calm behavior. If he becomes overstimulated, people should walk away from him. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: King was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put her teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy – and ending play or attention whenever King puts teeth on skin. He should be rewarded with attention and treats when he stops and/or when he is seeking attention in alternate ways.
