07/23/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Helloooo Papa! This happy chappie is soft and sweet as a marshmallow and I’ve simply never met a dog with a lighter touch! He dashes after a toy just as eagerly as any puppy but then pauses, slowly reaches down and ever-so-deftly picks the ball up in his mouth before trotting back to my side and letting me slip it away from him with ease (and lots of praise, of course!) and when I offer reward treats they’re practically licked from my hand. Though he can be a little shy at first, Papa enjoys behind-the-ear scratches and adores butt rubs and he’ll back his tush into my legs to show appreciation while making ‘puppy eyes’ over his shoulder to beg for more. He’s a nice leash walker and seemingly house trained, greeting passing dogs of all shapes and sizes with calm, happy manners (even when he’s met with snarling in return) and is friendly in playgroup too, though he has a bit of an eye for the ladies! A good boy with a heart even softer than his smushy face, Papa is single-pawedly putting the ‘gentle’ back in gentleman and he’d make a wonderful addition to any experienced home where patience and love are in plentiful supply.
07/19/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Donut came into our center on 7/16/2016. He initially would not allow any handling from staff but warmed up a few minutes later, easy in and out of the kennel. Donut pulled hard on leash for his relief walk. Donut was friendly and wiggly upon entering SAFER assessment room. He allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, relaxed. Donut leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, slight lip lick, tail wagging. He became over escalated during Tag game, grabbing leash/jumping up to grab closer to assessor’s hands, and required time to settle back down before continuing. Once settled, he was calm and positioned easily for Squeeze item. Donut pulled his paw back on first Squeeze item, did not pull back on second attempt. He settled with Toy, kept a firm grip with loose body. When off leash with other dogs, Donut is low to the ground and cautious at first. When he opens up, he also becomes intent on trying to mount the female greeter. The Behavior Team feels Donut would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have very young children. He would benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners as well as not to jump up. Donut may initially require a slow approach/slow introduction. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, slight lip lick Tag 3 . Dog over escalates, grabs leash/jumps up to grab closer to assessor’s hand, does not settle easily Squeeze 1: 2. Dog pulls back paw Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip , body loose Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Donut is low to the ground and cautious at first. When he opens up, he also becomes intent on trying to mount the female greeter.
07/17/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Papa has showed interest in briefly greeting other dogs, however eventually does become more intent on mounting. It should be taken into conisderation that Papa is unaltered and that his mounting is likely rooted in sexual motivation. The behavior team feels that Papa should require a pre-adoption interaction to ensure compatability with a future resident dog, due to limited amounts of interaction and observation in playgroup, and due to lack of owner profile. It is unknown how Papa’s behavior around dogs in the care center will translate into a future home. 7/17: When off leash with other dogs, Donut is low to the ground and cautious at first. When he opens up, he also becomes intent on trying to mount the female greeter. 7/19: Donut is soft bodied during greeting and appears continually interested in approach.
