05/07/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: A slender orange boy, shy, a bit scared at first, but happy to make a new friend and go out for a walk. His leash manners are lovely and when it started pouring in the middle of our walk we ducked into a doorway and hung out listening to the rain together, snuggling together and deepening our friendship. What a perfect rainy day snuggler King is! King loves treats, sits quickly for them and takes them gently even though, in my opinion, he’s a bit too thin. His gorgeous amber eyes are alert, intelligent and inquisitive as we watch people rush by under umbrellas. King loves to be pet, leaning in close giving me better access to his head – so cute! When the rain stopped we took some pictures in the park, King not minding being tethered and posing like a model. When our time together was over he hopped right back into his kennel, turning to give me a smile and a tail wag. Each time he saw me during the course of the day he came forward with a wagging tail. We were friends! King may need some time to warm up to new people, but love, a gentle touch and soft voice will make him feel safe and secure. He’s worth the time (not long at all) and effort to have a best friend forever and ever.
05/06/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
King came to us as a stray so we don’t have any behavior information other than what has been observed while in the shelter environment. Upon intake King was tense with stiff body language and growl at the admissions counselor. He was very nervous when entering the behavior room and had tense body language. King maintained very tense and stiff body language throughout the assessment. Due to the behavior displayed we recommend King be placed with a New Hope partner that can provide the behavior modification necessary before placement into a stable home. Look: 4. Dog holds eye contact while remaining motionless with ears forward. His body is stiff and becomes stiffer as assessment progresses. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body a bit tense, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needs coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor.
