03/19/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
3/19/16 19:45 Basic information: King a roughly 2 yr. old AM Pit Bull mix. The Owner got her from a friend as a gift; he has owned King for over a year. The owner surrendered King because King is too strong for her. King no health problems and has never been taken to a vet. Socialization: Around strangers King is friendly playful. King has never been around children. King does not like other animals and will often lung at them if he sees them out on the street or if they come to close. King has never bitten anyone. Behavior: The owner stats that King is not bothered when some moves his food or treats while he is eating, when someone takes his toys away or when someone disturbs him while sleeping. King likes to be brushed and given bathes but has never had his nails trimmed. When an unfamiliar person or animal approaches a family member or his home he approaches them in a friendly manor. The owner does not know how King is around loud noises such as storms or fireworks. For a new family to know: The owner describes King as friendly and playful with a very high activity level. His favorite activity is to play fetch with his owner. In the home King tends to follow the owner around the house and is kept mainly indoors. King sleeps in the floor of the living room on a blanket. King was fed Apollo dry dog food once a day. He is house trained and has never had an accident in the home, when outside he goes to the bathroom on or around Cement and grass. King knows the commands “sit “and “stay”. For exercise King is used to brisk walks on the leash and twice a day and does pull on the leash when excited. Behavior during intake: King was relaxed with loose body. King allowed us to scan (-), collared and placing in dog kennel.
03/23/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Hey! Let’s play – come on, whadaya waiting for! This quiet fellow in his kennel is all bouncy, goofy play once loose in the back yard. Gorgeously groomed he confirmed (as advised by his former mom) his housetraining skills the moment we were out the door, is gorgeously groomed, and is all about having a good time with some snuggling thrown in for good measure. We’re also told that King doesn’t guard his ‘stuff’, likes baths and being brushed, and is friendly and playful with people he meets. King never stopped wagging his tail the entire time we were together, and if I wasn’t quick enough with a treat or a ball toss he gave me a quick deep throated woof to remind me that he was waiting. As if I could forget this handsome, tail wagging, smiling boy standing in front of me. He loves to play fetch, loves to roll in close for some petting, and loves to have a good time. If you’re fun and active and ready to spend some quality time with the King, he’s hoping you’ll stop by to meet him today.
04/05/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
4/5: Due to the intensity with which he approaches other dogs and the warning signs of possible aggression he has shown in playgroup, we feel that King is most likely to succeed if he receives some behavior modification and counterconditioning before being placed into a permanent home. His previous owner also notes lunging behavior toward other dogs, but this does not appear to be barrier-specific based upon his behavior when introduced into a pen with another dog. He has not shown any human-directed aggression in the care center but his behavior toward other dogs is concerning and his underlying anxiety and reactivity toward other dogs needs to be addressed. 3/22 SAFER: King pulls a bit on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was a bit excited during handling; King urinates when excited during greetings or playtime. He followed the assessor at the end of the leash with a calm and relaxed body language when playing tag with assessor. He was not interested in toys. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, ears back, open mouth, wagging tail. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. No interest.
03/22/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, King is tense when greeting. He intially postures to mount the female greeter. When offered a correction from the female greeter, King vocalizes in response. When the other dog walks away, King follows, stiff bodied while growling, places his paws on her back, and continues to growl at louder volume. King’s previous owner reports that “King does not like other animals and will often lunge at them if he sees them out on the street or if they come too close.” – however, no additional details were given. The behavior department feels that King would be most comfortable as the only resident dog in a home until his behavior around other dogs can be followed up on. 4/5 update: King is muzzled due to his previous interaction. He rushes into the pen, growling and jumping onto the helper dog. His growling intensifies as she runs away, but he ceases with handler intervention. He rushes at her again, growling loudly, this time not responding to handler correction and needing to be separated by taking him by the leash and leading him out of the pen.
