Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. Allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, and tail is in neutral position with a relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.

Summary: King came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, he was friendly and social towards the handlers. He showed some concerns with the toy item, he would become stiff and take away the item.
Summary (1): According to King’s previous behavior King relaxed and social with other dogs.
5/2: When off leash at the Care Centers, King is sexually motivated. He did not respect the other dog’s corrections of head whip and muzzle punches, as she is moving away from him, he does however briefly respond well to human interruptions.
5/3: King continues to be sexually motivate and difficult to interrupt and needs to be slow down a number of times by handlers.
Summary (2):
Manhattan Care Center: 5/22: King approaches and greets the female helper dog politely. He follows and sniffs, then otherwise seeks attention from handlers.
Date of intake: 1-May-2018
Summary: Behavior unknown
Date of initial: 1-May-2018
Summary: Active, attention seeking, pulls hard on leash, allows all handling but gets a little mouthy.
ENERGY LEVEL: King displays a very high activity level in the care center.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)
Behavior Asilomar; TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments: No young children: Due to potential resource guarding behavior with the toy item. King gave an appropriate warning of his discomfort (stiff) but we feel that young children may not know to respect this warning. Older, dog savvy children can be considered as long as the adults feel confident that King can be left alone while playing so he does not need to escalate to a growl. Behavior modification for toy guarding behavior can be found at aspcapro.org.
Potential challenges: Resource guarding
Potential challenges comments:
Resource Guarding: King has been observed to become stiff over toys in the care center. It is important to leave King alone while he is playing and never to take anything directly from his mouth. When he is asked to drop something he should be traded for an item of equal or higher value, in order to reward King for relinquishing the item he has.
