A volunteer writes: Don’t let her cropped ears and barrel chest fool you, our adora-bull Kimmie doesn’t have a mean bone in her entire cow-print body, and she’s been melting hearts left and right since arriving at the Care Center with big brother, Bing Bong. Kimmie shares BB’s gorgeous looks and friendly nature, but it’s clear she’s the little wallflower of the family, peaceful, shy and so easy to handle on leash or off that she’d fit into almost any home without a fuss. Kimmie’s not really one for toys or games but going for a walk is clearly a highlight of her day, and the sight of my leash is celebrated with a hopefully raised tail and irresistibly eager eyes. She’s sociable toward other dogs, thrilled to be outdoors and seemingly house trained too and chilling out with her is a welcome break from the rambunctious energy of some of our younger pups. If your idea of a perfect doggie date includes a long stroll through the park followed by cozy couch snuggle,s then Kimmie just might be your dream come true. Ask to meet her at our Manhattan Care Center today.
05/04/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 5/1/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/3/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still with eyes averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Kimmie displayed no concerning behaviors on her assessment and was social throughout. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 5/4: When introduced off leash to the male greeter dog Kimmie is tense and avoidant. She tenses further, hard stares, then turns her head away when approached. Due to limited history and observation, the behavior department recommends allowing Kimmie time to decompress in a home before immediate introduction to other dogs. Follow up should be conducted to respectful dogs, at a slow pace. Kimmie should never be forced to interact with dogs if she appears uncomfortable. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/3/17 During her initial medical exam, Kimmie was social and easy to examine. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Kimmie so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, she displays a medium level of activity. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center Kimmie has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them and barking. As Kimmie appears to be alright with other dogs off leash, this reaction is likely due to excitement and frustration, we recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. She will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs.
