03/19/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Fun-loving Kiesha is trying to make the best of things and her smile is just as sunny as ever but it’s not easy to go from the only home you’ve ever known to a lonely kennel built for one. Just yesterday she had a real family with lots of toys and people to play with, including a toddler and a 4 year-old, and life was good. Then came the news that she was ‘against the rules’ of her building and suddenly all the familiar comforts were gone. Keisha’s bravely making a fresh start at the Manhattan Care Center and true to the glowing notes from her former owners, is already hard at work winning new friends of both the two and four-legged variety. She’s much more interested in dogs than people at this point (so many faces to greet and butts to sniff!) but you only have to read her intake notes to see the kind of gal Kiesha is at heart–she gave kisses, jumped up for attention and wagged her tail with a relaxed body. Kiesha loves her tennis ball and waits for my throw with eager eyes, dashing off quickly before briefly picking it up in her mouth and…well, it seems fetching the ball back is not part of her plan! While she does ‘stand guard’ over her prize, I can still grab it up if I move fast enough and it seems we could happily go on like this for hours. We’re told Kiesha is relaxed yet exuberant with her family and outgoing with strangers and she has no problem sharing her things or being groomed and bathed, including having a pedicure! In fact, she’s pretty much up for anything with her only ‘special need’ being a home without any kitty siblings or access to cats because she’s a fan of our feline friends only as far as she can chase them. An energetic family dog who misses having a family to love, Kiesha’s name derives from the word ‘favorite’ and she’d love to be the number one girl at the heart of your happy home.

03/16/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Kiesha took time to become comfortable in the care center. Over time she began to interact more readily and would engage in play with males (she has not yet been introduced to a female dog). Her owner reports that around other dogs Kiesha is “relaxed and playful and exuberant at play.” The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction as well as allowing her time to acclimate to her new surroundings before introducing her to any resident dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Kiesha is a bit anxious in the yard and seeks exit. She ignores greeting. 3/17 update: Kiesha continues to display anxious behavior while out in the yard, ignoring any greeting from the other dog. 3/22 update: Kiesha offers bows, becoming bouncy and soliciting play. 3/23 update: Kiesha very briefly offers a bow in response to play solicitation, but quickly becomes anxious and seeks an exit.
