02/23/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 2/21/17 Unaltered female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 2/22/17 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is soft. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Summary: Kia was a bit anxious though sought comfort in handler affection. She allowed all handling during assessment and displayed no concerns. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Kia displays assertive posturing, mounting both male and female dogs. Kia was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Kia be placed in a home with dogs that tolerate mounting and assertive behavior. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/21/17 Kia was friendly and allowed all handling during her initial exam. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Kia so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _x_Recommend no dog parks (Due to the display of assertive posturing Kia has displayed and the propensity for that behavior to not be received well by other dogs, the Behavior Department recommends that Kia initially not be taken to dog parks to give her adequate time to decompress from the shelter and her behavior towards other dogs be further addressed in a more controlled environment.)
02/22/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Kia displays assertive posturing, mounting both male and female dogs. Kia was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Kia be placed in a home with dogs that tolerate mounting and assertive behavior. 2/22: Kia displays assertive body language -standing tall and a high vibrating tail- when greeting a novel male dog. She briefly greets the male dog, standing tall behind him and placing her chin on his back. She attempts to mount him, but responds well to handler interruptions and can explore the pen. When she is in close proximity to the male, she continues to display assertive posturing by standing tall. 2/23: When interacting with a female dog, Kia immediately mounts the other female, persisting after the handlers interrupt and the other dog offers correction. The session is ended.
