12/29/16 12:42 Khalia is a six year old female American Pit bull mix. She was surrendered by her owner due to owner moving into a facility that does not accept pets. She was brought from a friend and was with her owner since she was a puppy. She was not taken to the vet by previous owner. Khalia has lived with two adults, two teenagers and another female pit-bull. She is described as friendly and outgoing towards adults and will engage in somewhat rough play, she likes to jump up when she greets someone. Khalia will bark when she sees children and owner stated he will tense and lunge, she has only interacted with children on walks. Owner was unsure of how she would behave around children due to the barking and kept her separated when children came to the home. Khalia is described as playful with the other dog and owner stated they would occasionally get into fights but nothing serious. Khalia has not been around cats. Owner did not report a bite history. Khalia is walked four times a day and is used to leash walks. She pulls very hard on leash and can be hard to control. Khalia is not bothered when her food was touched while eating in the home. Khalia tolerates bathing; owner did not trim her nails. Khalia has a high activity level and likes to run around the home. 01/02/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Unaltered female, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults (2), teenagers (2) and another large dog Behavior toward children: On walks, Khalia barks, tenses, and lunges when she sees children; she has not been allowed to interact with them in a home environment. Behavior toward dogs: Playful, sometimes rough play, with her housemate Behavior toward cats: Unknown FG/RG: None reported Bite history: No bite history reported Housetrained: Unknown Energy level/descriptors: Khalia is described as active and energetic. Other notes: Khalia jumps on people when greeting. She was crate trained but did not do well in the crate, biting the bars and trying to escape. She pulls hard on leash when walked. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 12/31/16 Look:1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (need coaxing to approach.) She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1& 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Khalia was friendly towards the assessor. No concerns were seen on this handling assessment. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Khalia displays neutral body language when greeting a novel male dog. She mostly keeps to herself as she explores the pen and is tolerant of the male dog’s face to face greeting. When the male dog greets her for too long, Khalia displays slightly stiff body language indicating that she in uncomfortable with this long interaction. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/31/16: During her initial medical examination, Khalia was active and tolerated all handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: Khalia is reported to be energetic and enthusiastic, and to jump when greeting. We recommend that she be taught an alternative behavior for greeting, such as sitting and looking at the person, using positive reinforcement (reward when 4-on-the-floor, ignore when performing undesired behaviors, keep greetings calm). She is also noted to pull hard on leash so we recommend a front-clip harness to deter pulling along with rewards for walking calmly. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods. If crating is desired, the crate needs to be re-taught by building positive associations such as allowing her to eat in the crate or providing high-value treats in the crate, and allowing her to adjust to it slowly. The crate should never be used as punishment. Khalia is an active young dog who will need daily mental and physical exercise to appropriately direct her energy. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home _X_No children (under 13): Khalia has not interacted off-leash with children so we are not certain what behavior she presents when she has no barriers, but her previous owner reports behavior on-leash indicating that she is not comfortable with children. For this reason and out of an abundance of caution, we recommend an adult-only home for Khalia.
