09/08/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 9/5/17 Unaltered Male, Stray Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 9/8/17 Look:2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity:1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag:4. Dog displays low threshold for arousal, rapidly escalating to growling and fixated on the leash with distraction needed. Toy: 3. Dog became a bit anxious and shows signs of frustration (jumping and barking). Summary: Kevin was friendly but become very anxious in the assessment room. PLAYGROUP: When off leash at the Care Center, Kevin greets the male and female helper dog with a neutral posture. He is sexually motivated and attempts to mount another male, ignoring his warning. He is separated after placing his chin over another dog’s back. Kevin was brought in as a stray so his behavior around other dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Kevin be placed in a home with resident dogs that are well socialized and match his calm demeanor. All introductions should be done slowly and under supervision. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Date of intake Kevin was friendly but become very anxious in the assessment room. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/6/17: During his medical examination, Kevin was very sweet but started to cry and growl when trying to draw blood.
ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Kevin so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home _X_No children (under 13)- Kevin appears to easily startle and become uncomfortable with up close handling, for these reasons we advise against a home with children at this time. Potential challenges: _X_Low threshold for arousal/frustration- Kevin has displayed low threshold for arousal, rapidly escalating and quickly tipping over to frustration (growling and fixated with the leash) Immediate intervention and consultation with a qualified veterinary behaviorist/professional trainer is strongly recommended to aid in addressing this issue to prevent further behavioral concerns that may appear in the future if not treated right away. We recommend only force-free, reward based training when introducing or exposing Kevin to new and unfamiliar situations. _X_Anxiety- Kevin has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking) continually through the SAFER and through play sessions outside. This behavior was not reported at intake, and we have no known history on Kevin, so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment.
