05/05/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: You know that intense guy in the group? The one you notice because he’s so handsome, the one who watches as you approach, quiet, focused, and scopes you out before he makes his move? That’s our Kevin! Watchful, quiet, maybe even a bit shy, when he’s sure he’ll give kisses and cuddles and tail wags, but not until he’s sure. On leash he’s a gem, licking my hand from time to time as we walk, goes potty in the perfect spot, and sniffs all the enticing scents our area has to offer. Off leash in the yard he explores, gently enjoys some treats and cuddles in my lap, reaching up to give me kisses as his tail wags. Kevin is the perfect weight for his size, has a clean well groomed coat, and although he’s doing a little stress shedding right now, it’s easy to see how nicely he’s been taken care of. I see Kevin having deep, thoughtful conversations with his new person(climate change, health care and dog treats), followed up by soft cuddles, kisses and tail wags. He’s just that kind of a guy! Come meet our deep thinker today, a lifetime of scintillating conversation (and cuddles) awaits! Another volunteer writes: In addition to the basic information about Kevin, there is one other thing you should know before you meet him: he is much more handsome than he appears in his photo. Prepare yourself! I was smitten when I first saw him sitting at the front of his cage waiting patiently to be walked. It soon became obvious that he was much more than a handsome face. This well-behaved, three-year-old made quite a positive impression on everyone we met on our walk. When I sat down on the bench in the park, Kevin immediately sat close to me and placed his head on my lap, giving me kisses and enjoying my hugs. Needless to say, we sat there for a long time and then walked around again. Spending time with happy Kevin was wonderful. If you are looking for a very special best friend, please come to the Manhattan Care Center and meet him. You’ll quickly understand what I mean

PLAYGROUP: 5/2: When introduced off leash to the female greeter dog Kevin is soft bodied with a wagging tail. He offers bows and spins to solicit play. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Kevin and other social or tolerant dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/28/17 During her initial medical exam, Kevin was calm and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Kevin so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful: Kevin has been observed to display fearful behavior during his stay at our care centers. Kevin startles easily and is made uncomfortable by loud noises and sudden movement. He displays proper warning signals as well as increasing distance from anything that may present a threat. We cannot be certain if any other behavior is suppressed as a result of his environment. A period of decompression is advised before introduction or exposure to new and unfamiliar situations. Force-free, reward based training is advised.
