Kenny
Hello, my name is Kenny. My animal id is #10649. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 24-Oct-2017, with the surrender reason stated as animal health – cannot afford vet bill.
Kenny is at risk due to being diagnosed with Canine Upper Respiratory Disease Complex. This is a contagious illness to other dogs, however it is easily treated in home with antibiotics for about 2 weeks. We are recommending that he go to an Adult Only home due to his fearfulness with sudden movements. He has been our playgroup rock star while in the care center.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: Lanky and stunning, Kenny defines ‘black is beautiful’. He has the sweetest face, making eye contact with soft doe eyes and a gently wagging tail. Surrendered by his family, we’re told he’s friendly to all (may sometimes jump to say hello), has been around young children and is friendly with them as well, is playful with both small and large dogs (and is a designated playgroup rockstar with us), is respectful towards cats, doesn’t guard his stuff, likes to play with balls and play tug, and likes to keep his person company. We’re also told that Kenny needs some work on his housetraining skills, and while he was walked twice a day, that might not be enough for him as he’s still young, so an extra walk or two might go a long way. He was also trained to use a wee wee pad indoors, which doesn’t help, in my opinion. I loved spending time with this hunk who doesn’t know how great he is. He’s a respectful cuddler, head buried in may lap as I massaged his head, he meets everyone with a wave of his tail, sits for treats and takes them so very gently with the very edge of his teeth. Kenny showed me nice leash manners, although his former owner said he pulled ‘as he was excited to be outside’. Gentle, calm, soft and easy, Kenny was such a good sport about wearing a pumpkin coat for some pictures. Let Kenny’s former owner’s loss be your gain, as he’s a terrific dog looking for a new family who will provide everything he needs to continue his path to being a rockstar adult dog. Kenny will provide all the love. Win Win.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Kenny has sometimes displayed fearful behavior towards novel people, but quickly warms up to handlers and displays highly social behavior. Kenny interacts with handlers outside off leash, seeking attention and petting and engaging with toys. He takes treats in a gentle manner and benefits from an initial slow approach. Once given a brief period to acclimate to his surroundings and become familiar with people, Kenny displays social behavior.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: ADULT ONLY HOME
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how fearful Kenny appears at the care center with quick movements, we recommend an adult only home at this time.
Potential challenges: : Fearful,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Though Kenny’s owner described him as a playful and cheerful dog, on his behavior assessment Kenny displayed high levels of fear, especially with quick movements. We do not know if this behavior will appear in a new home, but we recommend always going slow and giving Kenny the option to walk away from any social interaction. Kenny should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Kenny’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Kenny would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
