BEHAVIOR :
Kembo came into our center as an owner surrender on 8/26/2016. It is reported he has lived with children age 7 and up, relaxed and playful, though sometimes plays a little rough. He may chew shoes if they are left unattended, nervous during storms and fireworks. Owner states Kembo is not bothered if anyone touches his Food, Toys, Treats. Owner reports Kembo is housebroken to go outdoors on the grass. Kembo reportedly knows the cue ‘sit’, favorite treat is chicken. Kembo pulled a bit on leash or his relief walk. He was slightly nervous upon entering SAFER assessment room, but warmed up quickly when spoken to gently, giving hugs to assessor. He averted his eyes for Look, body soft, ears back, lip licking. During Sensitivity, he sat, ears back and lip licking. He was playful during Tag, jumping on the assessor at the end. He did not pull back his paw on either Squeeze attempt. He displayed minimal interest in Toy, sniffing it. When approaching a dog on leash at the care center, Kembo approached with body soft, tail below spine level. The Behavior Team recommends that Kembo be placed in an Average home. He would benefit from positive reinforcement training to teach his basic manners. He would also benefit from daily physical activity, such as runs, walks, and play, and mental stimulation, such as kongs and other puzzle toys.
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog sit still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture.
Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps on assessor softly.
Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog sniffs toy.
Dog-Dog: When off leash at the Care Center, Kembo approaches and greets other dogs with a soft, slightly nervous posture. After a short period of time, his tail un-tucks and he offers a few bounces but then attempts to mount the female helper dog.
PLAYGROUP:
Kembo’s previous owner reported that he will get anxious and be relaxed and playful.
8/29: When off leash at the Care Center, Kembo approaches and greets other dogs with a soft, slightly nervous posture. After a short period of time, his tail un-tucks and he offers a few bounces but then attempts to mount the female helper dog.
8/31: Kembo displays bouncy body language as he interacts with female dogs. He attempts to mount them, but listens to handler interruptions and continues to bounce.
