04/17/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Upfront in his kennel, watching me with his gorgeous amber eyes, who could resist? Certainly not me! Leashed easily, we head outside where Kelso potties immediately, and we’re off for a short walk before heading into the yard for off leash time. He snuggles, he plays, he zoomies, he kisses and he snuggles some more. Kelso amuses himself with a soft toy…a toss, a chase and another toss, and then into my lap for cuddles. His coat is a gorgeous slate grey and some good nutrition will bring out the luster that it needs. Playful, fun and snuggly Kelso is ready to be your wingman; come meet him today. Another volunteer writes: “I love Kelso!” “Kelso is my favorite!” “Kelso is such a good guy.” Just with one glance it’s not hard to see why 4 year-old Kelso has collected such a following. With startling good looks and a serious, elegant air Kelso has all the makings of a major dreamboat. Of course that’s only scratching the surface. Beneath that smooth exterior is a sensitive sweetheart, a playful pup, a waggy, wistful, wonderful boy with soulful eyes and one botched ear, and a heart open and ready for love. Kelso may have a legion of admirers but truly he only needs one. Kelso is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
04/07/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 4/4/17 Unaltered Male,Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 4/7/2017 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, body neutral. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, body a bit tense, mouth closed, lip lick. Tag 3 . Dog keeps pace at end of leash with high flagged tail, a bit tense, mouth closed, staying in close proximity to the assessor, unresponsive to touch. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. Flank squeeze 1 / 2: 3. Dog is difficult to position, closes mouth, tense Toy 1: 1. Dog keeps a firm grip, tail wag, he does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Kelso was difficult to position for up-close tactile handling, attempted to increase distance between dog and assessor, though he did not escalate beyond avoidance behaviors. PLAYGROUP: Kelso has has had limited interactions with other dogs in the care center. He has displayed interest in play though appears primarily focused on mounting female dogs. He has not yet had the opportunity to be introduced to a male dog while in our care. Future introductions should be conducted slowly, to respectful dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/4/17 During his initial medical exam, Kelso was tense and growling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Kelso so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home _X_No children (under 13): Kelso appears uncomfortable with up close handling, for this reason we advise against a home with children at this time. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Kelso has shown a number of warning and distance-increasing behaviors to different handling triggers. Interactions and petting should never be forced. Kelso may benefit from a slow introduction, preferably with treats, allowing Kelso to approach and warm up at his own pace.
