A volunteer writes: “I feel like I won the lottery with Kelly,” I say to another volunteer as I walk her, before quickly amending myself because winning the lottery for Kelly would actually mean not being walked by a volunteer at the shelter, but by a loving owner who has no sense of urgency other than getting out to enjoy the beautiful day. But if I feel anxiety being with her to try to communicate her wonders to the world, she has no such tension. What a dog! She offers kisses through the bars of her kennel, before taking it into a full-on tap dance as if to say, “Are you really picking me? Are you really picking me?” Who could possibly resist? This gentle, kind, soft-as-velvet girl, who looks like a hound mix, is an absolute pleasure to be with. She appears house trained, prefers a lap to almost any other activity (it gets her that much closer to your face so she can kiss it), and is the embodiment of love. Please, let her be on the winning end for the rest of her life, and you will be too!
Another volunteer writes: Kelly’s ginger coat is what first catches the eye. Then she draws you in with her enthusiasm and exuberance as you approach her kennel. She exudes friendliness from every pore! She was rather energetic during our walk, but, all in all, her leash manners are quite remarkable! She appeared to be a very social young lady as she greeted other dogs during our walk and loves getting TLC!
04/13/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Kelly pulls a bit on leash. She was excited but very interested in interacting with handler- jumped up, licked hands. During the assessment she was calm and relaxed during handling. Kelly was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. She took the toy away but had soft body language. Kelly did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that she can go to an Average home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have long lip or lip lick. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Playgroup Notes: Kelly is a bit tense when greeting, and becomes vocal when solicited with play.
04/10/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Kelly has mostly displayed a tense body and has been uncomfortable during interaction. Though she has become a bit less tense with continued introduction, she has not shown further interest in play or interaction. The behavior department feels that Kelly ay be most comfortable acclimating into a new home as the only resident dog until her behavior around them can be followed up on. Though she arrived into our care with another dog, in-home behaviors are unknown. When off leash with other dogs, Kelly is stiff during greeting, standing tall with hackles raised. She allows the greeter dog to approach and sniff but does not reciprocate interest. 4/12 update: Kelly is a bit less tense when greeting, and becomes vocal when solicited with play. 4/14 update: Kelly continues to display less of a tense body, but is still not completely comfortable with interacting.
