12/04/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: “Okay, sweet girl. Off we go.” 3 year-old Kay is soft and round, a shape that comes only from years of knowing love. She is a family girl who now finds herself without a family and whose warm, brown eyes are now quiet and sad. My leash stays slack at my side as we make our way to the park, the two of us like turtles in the sun with our shadows making four. Kay tends to her business straight away and as we come upon an empty bench she looks up at me as if to say, “Okay, so what now?” “Okay, sweet girl, let’s sit.” And sit for a spell we do as the wind picks up and whips leaves around us like happy confetti from the sky. At one point Kay begins to whimper either from the wind, or the cold, or both, or neither one. But as I rub smooth circles into her cream-colored chest she settles herself down and moves close to my side. Kay is a surrender to us. It seems she preferred to be the sole furry apple of her owner’s eye. And truly, who can blame her? She is more than enough to fill a home and a heart with her beauty, her sweetness, and her fondness for giving paw. We make our way back when the chill grows too great and Kay now seems more contented, more settled, more sure. But as we reach the driveway she stops short and gives one more quiet whimper. I immediately crouch down, “Okay, sweet girl, what’s wrong?” And I rub more smooth circles into her cream-colored chest and as her whimpers fall away carried off into the wind I know without a doubt what it is she needs to hear. “Okay, sweet girl, off we go.” “Okay, sweet girl, let’s sit.” “Okay, sweet girl, what’s wrong?” “Oh, Kay. Sweet girl. Welcome home.” Kay is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
