04/18/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I wanted to schmush that jowly face, and I did! Karla is stunning, her coat pristine white, her smile lights up the room, she’s soft and snuggly and she purrs! Give her a hug, she’ll fold herself into you and her purring starts. So sweet! When she’s not smiling, she’s the dog version of Grumpy Cat, and that’s simply her breed, and that’s when you want to schmush her face! Karla does little bunny hops in play, wags her tail at the fun of it all, and then comes over for more petting. Karla seems to be housetrained. She pulls on leash so a harness and/or some leash training will help. Clearly used to better treats than what I had to offer, she keeps her girlish fabulous figure by being discerning. Karla seems selective in her doggy friends, and when she decides she likes someone, engages in exuberant vocal play. I adore her, she’s a snuggle dream, soft, sweet and purring, and ready to find her forever snuggle partner.
04/17/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 4/15/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 4/17/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, closed mouth. Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps up and grabs leash. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Karla was social throughout her assessment and allowed all handling. During tag, she quickly became over excited and began leash biting, with some difficulty settling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: Karla has been selective when engaging with other dogs in the care center. Karla engages in bouts of play with select male and female dogs, offering clear corrections when no longer comfortable or interested in engaging. When greeting other select dogs, she has been observed to stiffen and hard bark. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Karla and respectful dogs on a one on one basis. Karla should never be forced to interact with dogs if she appears uncomfortable. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/15/17 During her initial medical exam, Karla allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Karla so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No dog parks: Based on observation made in our care, Karla may be most comfortable greeting unfamiliar dogs on a one on one basis.
Potential challenges: _X_Social hyper-arousal: Karla quickly became over excited during tag, jumping up on the assessor and biting the leash. She was able to settle after. Interactions with Karla should be conducted in a calm manner. If she does become over excited the interaction should be ended. Positive reinforcement, reward based training is recommended when working with her.
