Summary:: Kano is difficult to remove from the kennel, lunging and snapping at the leash. He appears to be uncomfortable or afraid of the slip lead. He did not allow any handling from his caretakers. Out of concern for his stress levels and his response to restraint, we feel Kano is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time. Please see his owner surrender profile for a full summary of his behavior in his previous home.
Date of intake:: 1/2/2018
Summary:: Allowed some handling.
Date of initial:: 1/3/2018
Summary:: Tense, whale eyed, head shy, muzzled for exam.
ENERGY LEVEL:: Kano is described as active and enthusiastic. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Kano as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of future aggression.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to Kano’s bite history, including a bite to a child, he should not be placed into a home with children. New Hope Only: Due to Kano’s bite history he needs to be placed with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. We recommend an experienced, adult-only foster home while Kano’s behavioral needs are addressed.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Bite history: Kano is reported to be reactive to strangers and children, growling, snapping, and sometimes biting. He poses a risk of future aggression and this behavior needs to be addressed in order to keep Kano and those around him safe.
