Kane
Hello, my name is Kane. My animal id is #10356. I am a desexed male brown brindle dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 21-Oct-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving – no pets allowed.
Kane 10356 is at risk for behavior challenges (New Hope Only determination). He has been difficult to handle and has tolerated minimal restraint, escalating to snapping when interrupted by his human caretakers during playgroup and pacing the pen anxiously after greeting the helper dog. Due to this behavior we have been unable to complete a handling assessment. We recommend placement into an adult-only home through a New Hope partner. There is no noted medical condition for Kane at this time.

Summary (1):: According to his previous guardian, Kane is relaxed and affectionate around other dogs and plays exuberantly with them. 10/22: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Kane is nervous and has a tucked tail while being introduced to a novel female dog. He greets her briefly before retreating to the corner of the pen. As the session continues he becomes slightly sexually motivated, persistently sniffing at her genital area, but does not attempt to mount and soon returns to the back corner. 10/24-25: Kane continues to display a nervous posture, and paces around the pen, when introduced to a calm group. He is briefly interested in the novel male dog before, moving away to explore the pens.

Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: New Hope: Kane has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Kane has been observed to display fearful behavior during his stay at our care centers, at times avoiding interaction and shying away from direct touch. Zeus startles easily and is made uncomfortable by loud noises and sudden movement. He displays proper warning signals as well as increasing distance from anything that may present a threat. We cannot be certain if any other behavior is suppressed as a result of his environment. A period of decompression is advised before introduction or exposure to new and unfamiliar situations. Force-free, reward based training is advised.
