Another volunteer writes:   One of the very fun things about bringing up a puppy is teaching them new things.  Kallyn met a wading pool yesterday on a hot, steamy day.   She wasn’t too sure about this new blue object, but after tossing in a few toys and putting her feet into the water she decided she loved it.   Retrieving a toy nose deep in the water, going in and out like a delicate lady, she was a joy to watch as she discovered this new thing. Watching her trying to figure out how to retrieve one toy with another in her mouth was hysterical, and she finally just lay down with her toy in front of her and gave me a big wet smile.   Some kisses and a tail wag sealed our new love affair.   She’s a peanut of a pup, easy and gentle, waiting patiently for her new person or family to find her.  Come meet her today.

BEHAVIOR:

KNOWN HISTORY: None

6/8/17

Spayed female, Stray

SAFER ASSESSMENT:

Date of assessment  6/9/2017

Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds.

Sensitivity: 1. Dog sits down and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture.

Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game, a bit distracted, settles easily at end.

Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed

Toy 1. Dog playfully engages, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy.

Summary:  Kallyn displayed high energy and movement throughout her handling assessment, wiggly and social.

DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT:

Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs.

PLAYGROUP:

Kallyn has not been completely comfortable interacting with dogs in the care center.  With continued socialization, she has begun to make progress when interacting with other calm dogs.  The behavior department recommends that future introductions occur on a one-on-one basis, to polite dogs.

4/5: When introduced off leash to the female greeter dog, Kallyn cowers away from approach and offers a defensive bark.  She offers a small lip curl and hard barks when approached a second time.  Kallyn continues to actively avoid interaction.

4/6: Kallyn continues to offer defensive correction when approached.  When the helper dog is turned away, Kallyn approaches to sniff their rear.

6/9: While greeting another dog through the gate, Kallyn barks. Once inside, she greets politely but will stiffen during face to face interaction.

6/10: Kallyn greets more politely today, though remains uncomfortable with face to face interaction.

6/12: Kallyn is a bit uncomfortable with approach, and walks away.

6/13: Kallyn greets the male dog politely and wanders the pen. She continues to be uncomfortable with face to face interaction.

6/14: Kallyn engages in bouncy play with a select male dog.

6/15: Kallyn engages in bouncy play with other respectful dogs.  When overwhelmed by rough play, she offers a correction and avoids that dog in particular.

6/16: Kallyn solicits and engages in bouncy play with a male helper dog.

6/17-18: Kallyn solicits and engages in bouncy play with a male helper dog. Kallyn becomes stiff towards a female dog.

6/19: Kallyn engages in play with a select male dog.

INTAKE BEHAVIOR   6/8/17 Kallyn initially barked at approaching counselor but warmed up and allowed all handling.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:  6/8/17 During her initial medical exam Kallyn allowed handling

ENERGY LEVEL:

We have no history on Kallyn so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care cente she displays as having a high level of energy. Kallyn will benefit from daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend food puzzles and long lasting chews along with daily walks, runs, exercise, and play to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience)

_X_Recommend no dog parks: The behavior department feels that Kallyn would be most comfortable meeting other dogs on a one-on-one basis.

A volunteer writes:
Kallyn is a puppy full of big talk… She acts tough but she  is really all soft inside… Kallyn lets you know that she does not like  her kennel.  She chills out when she sees the leash, the promise of a walk and company. She strolls nicely, tail happy, sniffs a lot her new premises, does her business and barks at other dogs met, like she wants to make sure her peers do not come to close. Pigeons  do not catch her attention. She sits perfectly well on command and takes treats politely from my hand. Kallyn is so pretty, petite, compact, perfectly dressed in a silvery coat and those ears and pout that give her face so much character. She is a puppy trying to find her way to adulthood , too confident at times and innocent or naïve at others…I love the way she abandons herself in my arms for kisses and hugs… She is then so sweet and dependent like her given name indicates…. Kallyn is only ten months of age and is in need of guidance(like any youngster) to become the perfect grown up pooch that will fit  in harmony into any household. If you understand puppies and feel up to the task of bringing up one, come to the Manhattan Care Center, meet Kallyn and take her home as your new forever best friend.
