02/16/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
02/16/16 15:43 Basic Info: Kali A1065220 is a 4yr old female white & black American Staffordshire/Beagle mix who was given to the owner from a neighbor 4yrs ago and is being surrendered due to the owner moving to where pets aren’t allowed. Kali’s last vet visit was in 2015 and she currently has no known health issues/injuries. Socialization: Around strangers Kali is friendly/outgoing. She’s lived with kids ages 2, 5 & 8yrs old. Kali is relaxed, playful & gentle with them also with the adults in the home. Kali hasn’t lived with other animals but when she spots dogs on the street she barks and pulls the owner towards them. The owner hasn’t let her get close to them to see what she would do. Kali hasn’t bitten/scratched any person or animal. Behavior: Kali isn’t bothered by the following: having her toys/treats touched/moved, being brushed, or if someone unfamiliar approaches the home or family member. If you go near or attempt to touch/move her food/food bowl she’ll growl. Kali isn’t allowed on furniture, she hasn’t had her nails trimmed, or been held/restrained. Kali isn’t bothered by bath time however she’ll growl when you touch her paws. For a New Family to Know: Kali is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, mellow, excitable & independent with a medium activity level. The owner likes that Kali likes being hugged. Kali loves to run. When the owner is home she’ll follow them around. Kali enjoys ball toys and games of fetch. Kali is mostly an indoor dog who’s walked 3x a day where she pulls on the leash, she has been walked off leash where she’ll wander some but comes when called. Kali sleeps on a dog bed and eats Pedigree dry food 3x a day as treats she’s given dog meatballs or dog bones. Kali is house broken but will “go” if someone takes too long to take her out. When left home alone Kali is well behaved. She can be kept in a crate for up to 2hrs. Kali’s known commands are “sit” & “come”. Intake Behavior: Kali appeared nervous and had her tail tucked underneath throughout the intake but she wagged it when spoken to gently/softly. Kali allowed to be scanned (-), collared & taken pictures of. She seemed comfortable with walking alongside us as she was lifted onto the transport van.
02/18/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Kali is with us as her family moved to a place not allowing dogs. I certainly can believe that her mom was a Beagle as she is ravenous for treats and food. She is not overweight, though, and has rather a nice figure. Kali comes with nice comments. She lived in harmony with young children and is known to be very affectionate and playful. We did verify that she is indeed housetrained and pulls a bit on the leash. Nothing that an average volunteer can not manage. Kali is quite intense in whatever she does. Eating, playing or simply obeying commands. She is happy to come out of her kennel and wags her tail, content, all the way to our pen. She knows her name quite well and comes right away when called, sits on command and waits anxiously…for the next step. True to her origins, Kali, in no time, sucks treats out of my hand. Tennis balls…they are her friends. She will jump high for them, catch them expertly and play with /mouth them for ever, rather prefering not sharing them. She does not mind me petting her while she chews on her toy. Her former human told us that Kali liked to guard her food but not her treasures. Kali was a well established family dog with a little issue her people manage to handle quite well, although not to amend or cure. Nobody is perfect and every family has its flaws. Kali has lots of qualities to make a wonderful forever best friend and could, in experienced hands, bloom into a perfect pet. Kali is at the Manhattan Care Center, waiting for her new human and teacher.
02/18/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Kali came into our center as an owner surrender citing moving issues. It is reported she lived with children ages 2, 5, & 8, relaxed, playful and gentle with them. Owner reports Kali will growl if anyone attempts to touch her Food, Food Bowl, or her paws. During intake, Kali was nervous with tail tucked but wagged when spoken to gently and allowed all handling. Kali pulled hard on leash for her relief walk, very focused on looking for Food. She jumped up hard on assessor while approaching to begin assessment. She held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, jumping up hard at end of item. Kali mouthed assessor’s hand during the positioning for Sensitivity item, no pressure. Once positioned, she leaned in, lip lick, mouth open, tail wag. Kali followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, but grabbed the leash mid way through game to chew/tug. She settled at the end of game easily and approached assessor. Kali mouthed assessor’s hand, no pressure, during both Squeeze attempts. She grabbed Toy quickly and took it away, body became stiff as assess-a-hand approached. When off leash with other dogs, Kali briefly engages in bouts of play, becoming vocal and offering a few paw slaps. Due to her potential for possible possessiveness, the Behavior Team feels Kali would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have children. She would benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners, as well as not to jump up and the command ‘drop it’ along with trade up games. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds, jumps up on assessor at end of item. Sensitivity: 2. Dog leans into the Assessor, lip lick, ears back, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog follows at the end of the leash, grabs leash mid game, focused on leash, settles at end. Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog gently places her open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy 3. Dog takes away quickly, keeps a firm hold. Her body is stiff when approached. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Kali briefly engages in bouts of play, becoming vocal and offering a few paw slaps.
02/17/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Kali engages in bouts of play with other dogs. She occasionally becomes vocal during play. The behavior department recommends that Kali may be placed into a home with another social dog. A pre-adoption interraction is recommended to ensure that play style is compatible with a resident dog. The previous owner of Kali reports that ” when she spots dogs on the street she barks and pulls the owner towards them”, but has never been introduced. When off leash with other dogs, Kali ignores greeting from the male greeter. She instead wanders the yard. Kali offers minor correction for mounting. 2/18 update: Kali briefly engages in bouts of play, becoming vocal and offering a few paw slaps. 2/19 update: Kali engages in a little bit of play with males and females. She offers correction when mounted. 2/20 update: Kali is uncomfortable when mounted, quickly turning and moving away. She engages in soft play with respectful dogs. 2/21 update: Kali approaches a calmer male dog, and becomes pushy and vocal, jumping on the other dog when he does not interact. 2/22 update: Kali ignores greeting from other dogs and instead keeps to herself. 2/23 update: Kali is vocal during play. She corrects pushier play styles.
