Kaleman was born and raised at home along with his mommy, 12 year old Princesa . They were brought together to the care center as their owners lost their home. Kaleman who is no “green man” seems to be a pooch of very mix lineage, counting probably Labbish and Shepherdy genes amidst the Pitie’s ones he got from his mom. He is known as the pooch with a great smile… Indeed, Kaleman owns a magnificent Pitie grin and bright engaging eyes. He is so welcoming in his kennel, right at his door and ready to go out and be in company. He is a socialite and loves to hang around people. Kaleman is a pleasure to walk. He strolls slowly around the block, doing his business on the way without marking. He nears other dogs politely, even the little ones and does not chase the birds. Left alone in a pen, he does not bark, just explores the premises and ….check my bag for goodies. Like his mom, Kaleman loves treats and will even sit for them. He loves attention, caresses, hugs, sweet talks. Indeed, he is a very sociable and friendly dog who is a real pleasure to spend time with. Kaleman comes with excellent comments from his former masters. He was clearly loved and well cared for. Like Princesa, Kaleman is an older dog who has still a lot of life and spunkiness in him to start with success a new chapter in his existence. While lively, playful and loving, he is well mannered, calm and will not send you flying in the air like a kite on a walk…. I am part of the club of people who would love a dog , a companion like Kaleman. I hope that you are too and will consider him as your new forever best friend. Kaleman is waiting for you at the Manhattan Care Center.
Another Volunteer Wrote: Coleman came in with his mama, both owner surrenders, and it is clear that he was a most beloved mama’s boy. He’s got the most glorious manners–housetrained, walks like a dream on a leash–and has such a wonderful way about him. He goes about to everyone on the street to say hello with a wag of his tail, but so gently it’s as if he was tipping his hat and wishing them a good morning. In the park he is all snuggles and dear company…if he didn’t start to pull back as we reapproached the shelter, as if perhaps I would change my mind with a bit of resistance, you would never know that he was anything but happy-go-lucky even though he has lost his home and the companionship of his mother. This is a great, great dog, ready to be a part of a family again!
Socialization:
Around strangers Kaleman is friendly/outgoing. He’s spent time with children ages ranging from 4-17yrs and was gentle, exuberant, relaxed, playful with them also the adult in the home & Princesa (even though at times they are jealous when the other is getting attention/affection while they aren’t and will attempt to fight, no skin has been broken or bleeding have occured). Kaleman has never bitten/scratched any person or animal.
Behavior:
Kaleman isn’t bothered by the following: having his food/food bowl, toys/treats touched/moved, being moved off of furniture, being brushed, bath time or being disturbed while sleeping/resting. He hasn’t had his nails trimmed. If someone approaches the home/family member Kaleman will bark to alert you.
For A New Family to Know:
Kaleman is friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, mellow & independent with a low-medium activity level. Kaleman enjoys sleeping, playing and being out in the yard (he only lived indoors during the winter months in his previous home over 1yr ago). Kaleman enjoys chew toys and games of fetch, chase, wrestling (with Princesa-even though at times it gets a little rough) & tug. Kaleman is mostly an indoor only dog who sleeps anywhere & is walked 1-2x a day where \he doesn’t pull on his leash. He eats dry Pedigree dog food 2x a day. He will have accidents in the home if someone takes too long to take him out. When left home alone Kaleman is well behaved.
Intake Behavior:
Kaleman allowed all handling and had a loose. wiggly body. He allowed to be scanned (-), collared & taken pictures of including positioning him during his photo session. Kaleman then walked into the kennel on his own.
