Kairo
Hello, my name is Kairo. My animal id is #19635. I am a male gray dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 31-Jan-2018.
Kairo is at risk due to behavior concerns. Kairo has not acclimated well to the kennel environment, and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Medically, we have no concerns for Kairo, who presents as a healthy dog.
My medical notes are…

Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
Date of intake:: 1/31/2018
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray
Date of assessment:: 2/3/2018
Toy:: 1. No interest.
Summary:: Kairo is difficult to remove from the kennel, lunging and snapping at the leash. He appears to be uncomfortable or afraid of the slip lead. He has also allowed minimal handling from his caretakers. Out of concern for his stress levels and his response to restraint, we feel Kairo is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (1):: Kairo was surrender as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. 2/1: When off leash at the Care Centers, Kairo greets with a soft, lowered body. He is nervous around the handlers, keeping his eyes on us and maintaining a lowered head and distance. Chance does interact with the helper dog and becomes sexually motivated; mounting and licking her genital region. 2/2: Today, Kairo was nervous-tucked tail and flat ears- and briefly greeted the novel female dog, before avoiding both her and the handlers the rest of his session.
Date of intake:: 1/31/2018

Recommendations comments:: New hope partner: Kairo has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Kairo has displayed fearful behavior in shelter, he displays no social behavior towards handlers and attempts to increase distance and avoid contact. Because he is so uncomfortable, Kairo does not tolerate any form of human-touch and has attempted to bite upon direct contact.
