Kaine
Hello, my name is Kaine. My animal id is #8731. I am a desexed male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks i am about 1 years 9 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 03-Oct-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: More delicious than a s’more, more fun than leaping headfirst into a pile of leaves, and more joyous and exciting than the happiest of hay rides is 1.5 year-old Kaine. An overgrown Tootsie Roll on four chocolate legs, nope it doesn’t get much cuter or sweeter than Kaine. Well, actually it does. Just slip a dapper red t-shirt over our handsome boy and poof! He’s now red carpet ready. And please note that despite Kaine’s very young age he is perfectly calm and tolerant of all handling, allowing me to push and pull those sweet chocolate legs making sure his T fits to a….T. Yes Kaine is quite the sight in his bright shiny coat as he trots happily by your side and while he stops to take treats nicely, something he’s seemingly done quite often by the looks of his extra round belly. And the minute I drop down to the ground for a rest Kaine is quick to join me for snuggles and kisses before eventually padding off, fully belly and all, to explore the rest of the yard. Kaine comes to us as an owner surrender having previously spent time with children as young as three, large dogs, and even cats with whom he played exuberantly. Add some sugar to your fall and some sweetness to your life and come meet the delicious creature that is our lover boy Kaine. Kaine is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
Kain is at risk due to CIRDC.

Animal Behavior Saved At: 11-Oct-2017 15:35:23.000 Animal ID: 8731 Animal Name: Kaine Age: 1 Year 9 Months 1 Week Tag Number: Breed: American Staffordshire Bull Terrier Gender: Male Spayed / Neutered: Yes Handler: Observer: Behavior Assessment Date: 10/5/2017 Retest Date: Retest Reason: Next Test Date: Date of intake: 3-Oct-2017 Spay/Neuter status: Yes Means of surrender (length of time in previous home): Owner Surrender (In home for 4 months) Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: Friendly and outgoing Behavior toward children: Affectionate and play exuberantly Behavior toward dogs: Respectful with large dogs Behavior toward cats: Exuberantly playful Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: No Energy level/descriptors: Kaine is described as excitable, friendly, and confident with a very high energy. Other Notes: Kaine will bark and destroy things in the home when left home alone. Date of assessment: 5-Oct-2017 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog follows at the end of the leash, body low and a bit fearful. Paw squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Paw squeeze 2: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw. Flank squeeze 1: Item not conducted Flank squeeze 2: Item not conducted Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. Dog does not place his/her body between you and the toy. Summary: Kaine immediately approached the assessor in the assessment room with a soft, wiggly body. He jumped up on the assessor in a social manner, soliciting attention. He displayed a high level of movement and activity and displayed no concerning behaviors. Summary (1): Kaine has displayed interest in playing gently with other dogs. HE may take time to warm up to unfamiliar dogs. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Kaine and respectful, gently playful dogs. 10/4: When introduced off leash to the female greeter dog, Kaine is soft when greeting, offers playful bows. He becomes overwhelmed when play is reciprocated and hides behind handlers. Summary (2): 10/5: Kaine is polite and soft when greeting in a large group of male dogs. He shows brief interested in play, though conflicted- he offers play bows, then barks and retreats. Summary (3): 10/6: Kaine is polite and soft greeting a male dog, then becomes aroused and barks at running play. Summary (4): 10/7: Kaine engages in some soft play with a female dog. ENERGY LEVEL: Kaine’s previous owner described him as having a very high level of activity. He is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below) Behavior Asilomar TM – Treatable-Manageable Recommendations: No young children (under 5) Recommendations comments: No young children: Due to Kaine’s previous owner reporting that he is rough in play with young children, we recommend a home without young children. Older children who are comfortable around large, exuberant dogs should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: Destructive behavior Basic manners/poor impulse control Potential challenges comments: Destructive behavior: Kaine is reported to show destructive behavior in the home, such as chewing on walls. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Kaine will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Basic manners/poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Recommendations Adoption Recommendations: Comments: Suitability With Children: Other: Experience no young children Yard Size: Overall Rating: Passed For Rehoming: Indemnity/Waiver: Adoption Summary: A volunteer writes: More delicious than a s’more, more fun than leaping headfirst into a pile of leaves, and more joyous and exciting than the happiest of hay rides is 1.5 year-old Kaine.
