A volunteer writes:
How could anyone resist that face?!!! I’ve nicknamed Justin ‘Ferdinand’ as he’s more of a bull in a china shop than a typical gentle giant but behind his goofy enthusiasm there’s a big heart filled with nothing but love and he’s ready to fill your happy home up to the brim! Justin joined us at the Care Center when his owner sadly passed away but he’s making the best of things and getting on with the all important business of expanding his fan club. He loves treats and will come and sit very nicely for them and while he is a bit of a puller on leash, he’s also quite attentive to my voice and seemingly very house trained too. He’s already aced his behavior assessment and shown off his boisterous doggie social skills in playgroup and now he’s ready to head off into the sunset with a brand new family. If you’ve got plenty of space in your heart and home for a big ol’ Lab-ish bundle of love then run, don’t walk, to our Manhattan Care Center and ask to meet Justin today!
Another volunteer writes:   Sleeping on his bed when I arrived at his kennel, Justin stood to welcome me with an easy wave of his tail. Easily leashed, he stepped out and off we go, the first order of business, his business.  He’s a gorgeous, unique looking boy with an equally unique personality, low key, calm, friendly, tail waggy and affectionate.  His tail never stops wagging and as we hang out on a park bench he joins me, washing my face with sweet nibble kisses. Stretching his head up and closing his eyes as I scratch under his chin, it’s clear he’s known the love of a happy home before his owner passed away.  He’s a snorter so you’ll always know when he’s happy, and he’s doing an amazing job of adjusting to his new situation.  He’s wowed staff,  he’s wowed volunteers, and now he’s ready to wow you, so come on over and ask to meet him.
BEHAVIOR :

SAFER ASSESSMENT:

Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds.

Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds.

Toy: 1. Minimal interest, takes toy then loses interest.

Summary: Justin displayed no concerning behaviors on his assessment and was social throughout.

DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT:

Summary

PLAYGROUP:

5/7: When introduced off leash to the female greeter dog Justin solicits play with bows and paw slaps, with ultimate intent to mount.  He takes correction though persists afterward.

5/8: Justin continues to engage in and solicit play with the ultimate intent to mount the female helper dog.

6/17- 6/19: Justin displays soft and bouncy body language when interacting with a playful female dog.

6/20: Justin engages in mouthy, wrestling play with a female that enjoys mouthy play.

6/21-6/26: Justin engages in the same mouthy play with another male dog.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
During his initial medical exam, Justin was tense but allowed handling.
ENERGY LEVEL:
We have no history on Justin so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience)
