01/18/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Junie! Though first meeting her on a cold, snowy day, still a name and a dog that conjures up images of blooming flowers, sunny weather and days at the beach! Junie is a ball of energy. She doesn’t stop moving! She LOVES to play with toys, and after relieving herself in the yard, will grab one and do zoomie after zoomie with it in her mouth, only stopping to shake it around or toss it up into the air, and start the process all over again. Her playful and energetic demeanor serves her well here in puppy playgroup: she’s bouncy, vocal, playful, and responds appropriately to other dogs’ behavior. While Junie’s fun-loving personality should be enough to sell you on her, it doesn’t hurt that she’s impossibly cute! The blocky head of a pitbull, short legs of a hound-dog and chubby middle of a dog that it’s clear enjoys her snack, make for the most adorable little black and white cookie. Junie is eagerly waiting for a family that can keep up with her, provide more training and socialization and love her playful ways. Ask to meet her today!
01/14/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 1/14/17 Look:2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity:1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag:1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1& 2: 2. Dog gently places her open mouth over the Assessor’s hand applying light pressure. Toy:1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Summary: Junie was friendly toward the assessor, active and mouthy throughout the assessment. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Junie was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Junie solicits and engages in high energy play with male and female dogs. She offers appropriate corrections when a dog attempts to mount her or attempts to engage in inappropriate play styles. She is able to take appropriate play breaks and displays bouncy body language throughout all interactions. The Behavior Department recommends that Junie be placed with dogs that match her high energy play style. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 1/13/17: During her medical examination, Jumpy was active but allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Junie so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Sandy displayed high energy and movement throughout the assessment, as well as during other interactions. She may benefit from puppy training to learn basic manners and impulse control, including leash manners. _X_Mouthiness: While she applies only light pressure, Junie was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put her teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy – and ending play or attention whenenever Junie puts teeth on skin. She should be rewarded with attention and treats when she stops and/or when she is seeking attention in alternate ways.
