08/13/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: June is a beautiful redhead we have at the Manhattan Care Center, who jumps into your lap, begging for caresses and kisses….It is very obvious that this middle aged gal, well nourished, well dressed, healthy looking and super sociable, was a family dog just yesterday. She owns a great smile and sparkling eyes when she is with a caretaker, staff or volunteer and keeps the serious face for her kennel… June pulls a little on the leash until she does her business. She likes treats but will not sit for them. She is a little anxious when she is tethered for pictures and relaxes when she is in the arms of her “person”. Other dogs are met without fuss. Playgroup time will tell us if she enjoys the presence of her peers. Still, older dogs, often prefer hanging out with humans, mostly if they never really mingled much with their kind. June is a feel good dog, the woman/man best friend, the faithful companion, always there to the rescue, ready to share with her master whatever is good or bad in life… We do not know much about June but think that she would make a very affectionate and loyal friend if she is given a chance. She has seen quite a bit in her life, she will bring the wisdom of her age. Come and meet June at the care center. Hopefully, it will be a very happy match!

08/14/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
June came into our center after a member of the public found her tied to a pole. She was relaxed during intake, soft body and wagging tail, allowed all handling. June walked well on leash for her relief walk, no pulling. June was friendly and sociable upon entering SAFER assessment room. She held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, tail wagging. June leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, ears back, body soft. She was distracted and unresponsive to touch during Tag game. June did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. She kept a firm grip on Toy, body not stiff. When off leash with other dogs, June is cautious while greeting. She begins to ‘tap dance’ a bit around the female greeter, and does bounce around and engage in very small bouts of play, albeit still unsure at times. The behavior team feels June should have a pre-adoption interaction to ensure compatibility with any resident dog in a potential future home. The Behavior Team feels June would do well with an Average adopter. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip, not stiff. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, June is cautious while greeting. She begins to ‘tap dance’ a bit around the female greeter, and does bounce around and engage in very small bouts of play, albeit still unsure at times. The behavior team feels June should have a pre-adoption interaction to ensure compatability with any resident dog in a potential future home. June may do bets with slow, positive interactions to allow her to become comfortable. She arrived as a stray, so her history around dogs is unknown.
