03/01/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Juju was found all alone in a park and brought to the Manhattan Care Center. He is a cute jewel carved out of a rare African wood. Juju, indeed is a good looking little boy, barely seven months of age, a little plump, dressed in a silky coat, a bit shy, mixed up and who seems to have stepped into a world totally foreign to him..Did he ever wander beyond his home? Did he ever meet people other than his owners? What about other dogs..? Juju is a bit timid and submissive when I open his door. Once leashed, he follows easily, does his business quite early and roams around the pen, leash free. He is not too interested in the tennis balls or my treats although he ate the the kibbles in his den. He is puzzled by other pooches, a little scared of them, it seems and offers sometimes a bark or a soft growl…while ….play bowing too….He was quite happy meeting a crying male Bull Terrier, another puppy and a young female with whom he engages in a running play…It is not easy to grow up, mostly all by oneself, without a lap to cuddle on or arms to be held by…Well, Juju is not “asking the world from us” but it certainly would “mean the world” to him if you would say to him…”Be Mine, my sweet little boy, my new friend, forever”…..Juju is at the Manhattan Care Center, wishing upon a star…
02/29/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
JuJu came into our center on 2/26/2016 as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. He was friendly upon intake. JuJu pulled slightly on leash for his relief walk. He barked and whined to solicit attention in the SAFER assessment room, jumping up. Juju allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands for Look item, body soft. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, mouth open, ears back. Juju playfully engaged during Tag game, running and jumping along, playfully jumped on assessor at end of game. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts, but moved his body away in between attempts. He playfully and enthusiastically engaged with Toy, keeping a firm grip with loose wiggly body. When off leash with other dogs Judas is nervous at first but quickly warms up to the helper dog. He approaches to sniff then begins to bounce around her, soliciting and engaging in play. The Behavior Team feels JuJu would do well with an Average adopter and would make a nice family pet. He may benefit from puppy obedience classes to learn not to jump up, as well as daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play and durable toys such as kongs and nylabones to positively direct his puppy energy and enthusiasm. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Mouth open, ears back. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game, indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc.,jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1/ 2 : 1. Dog does not pull back paw, moves body away in between attempts. Toy 1: 1. Dog playfully engages, settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Judas is nervous at first but quickly warms up to the helper dog. He approaches to sniff then begins to bounce around her, soliciting and engaging in play.
