MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/29/17 During his initial medical exam, Jojo was tense and allowed limited handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Jojo so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, he displays a medium level of activity.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to Jojo’s bite history, we recommend an adult only home _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Jojo has bitten while at the care center and appears uncomfortable with some handling. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Jojo has stiffened when uncomfortable with handling and on one occasion he has bitten when he was being leashed. It is important to be cautious when touching him as we do not know where he may have sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Jojo to be more comfortable with this. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Jojo has bitten when uncomfortable at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Jojo the option to walk away from any social interaction. Jojo should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Jojo’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Jojo would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
