Hello, my name is Jo Jo. My animal id is #10442. I am a female brown brindle dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 22-Oct-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving – no pets allowed.
Jo Jo is at risk due to being diagnosed with Canine Upper Respiratory Disease Complex and will likely require home rest and a series of antibiotics for up to 14 days. This is a contagious illness to other dogs.

Behavior during intake: Jo Jo had a soft and wiggly body during intake. Counselor was able to scan for a microchip, collar and take a picture without any issues.
Basic Information:: Jo Jo is a 2 year old female that has no previous or current medical issues that the owner is aware of. Owner had Jo Jo for 2 years but had to surrender due to moving to an apartment that does not allow pets.

How is this dog around strangers?: Around strangers, Jo Jo is friendly and likes to jump on whoever passes her by to say hello.
How is this dog around children?: Owner did not have any children so behavior is unknown.
How is this dog around other dogs?: Owner did not have any dogs so behavior is unknown.
How is this dog around cats?: Owner did not have any cats so behavior is unknown.
Resource guarding:: Jo Jo is not bothered by having her food, treats or toys taken away. She takes treats very gently from the hand.
Bite history:: Jo Jo does not have a bite history

Has this dog ever had any medical issues?: No
For a New Family to Know: Jo Jo is described as friendly, affectionate, playful and excitable. She has a high activity level and likes to play with balls and chew toys. Jo Jo was kept mostly indoors and is house trained. The only time she would have an accident is if the owner did not walk Jo Jo on time. In the home, owner fed Jo Jo dry food only brand Beneful. When left alone in the home, Jo Jo was always well behaved. Owner has never tried to crate train her so behavior is unknown. Jo Jo knows the cues sit, come, down,stay and paw. For exercise, Jo Jo was taken on brisk walks on the leash. When on leash, she tends to pull very hard. Owner has never tried to walk her off leash as she will run away.

Look:: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity:: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, and tail is in neutral position with a relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag:: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins.
Paw squeeze 1:: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw.

Toy:: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog may smell or lick, then turns away.
Summary:: JoJo allowed all handling during the assessment. She was friendly, and playful.
Summary (1):: Jo Jo displayed anxious behavior throughout her sessions in Playgroup, and mostly kept to herself. She is assertive with another female dog, and attempts to mount her while following her around the pens. Jo Jo’s previous guardian did not report on her behavior around other dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that Jo Jo be placed in a home with resident dogs that are respectful and tolerant of her assertive behavior. 10/23: When off leash at the Care Center, Jo Jo greets the male helper dog with a soft, wiggly body. She solicits gentle play with paw slaps and bouncy spins. Towards the end of the session when the male dog was not paying attention to her, Jo Jo attempts to mount him several times. 10/25: Jo Jo is anxious today; pacing the pens while seeking for an exit. Her hackles are raised when the greeter sniffs her genitals and she quickly moves away from him. 10/26: Jo Jo is assertive around a calm female dog. She attempts to mount her, and follows her around the pen. 10/27: After being introduced to a nervous male, Jo Jo displayed an assertive posture, and began to follow him around the pens. She ignored him after handlers interrupted this behavior.
