Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 2/5/17 Unaltered Male, Stray Bite history: Yes, bit the person who found him when she attempted to look at the tags on his collar. Bite broke skin. SAFER ASSESSMENT: Date of assessment 2/12/17 Toy: 1. No interest Summary: John Wayne snapped while attempting to collar him. Handling portions of the assessment were omitted. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Summary MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/5/17 During his initial medical exam, John Wayne snapped. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on John Wayne so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. At the care center, he appears to have a moderate activity level. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to John Wayne’s bite history, and his uncomfortability with handling, we recommend an adult only home. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: John Wayne has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. In addition, he has shown discomfort with handling by biting a person who touched his collar. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity (John Wayne has bitten when his collar was touched. At the care center he has snapped when people have attempted to touch him. Due to this level of discomfort with handling, the behavior team recommends that a force-free, positive reinforcement trainer be contacted to work on a desensitization to handling protocol.) _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (John Wayne has attempted to bite during his stay in the care center and has and has bitten when uncomfortable; guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Sasha to new and unfamiliar situations.)
