03/01/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 2/20/17 Neutered, Stray Bite history: Yes, he bit a woman. Circumstances and severity of the bite are not known. SAFER ASSESSMENT: John has been difficult to remove from the kennel. John has allowed minimal handling in the care center; he is tense and avoids interaction with his new caretakers. He watches and tracks the humans around him carefully at all times. Due to the behaviors observed, and out of concern for his stress level, we do not feel it is appropriate to perform a handling assessment at this time. Please review the full owner surrender profile for information on John’s behavior in his previous home as a guideline. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Summary MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/20/17 During his initial medical exam, John was tense, growling, and snapping. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the fear/avoidance behavior displayed in the care center, we cannot fully evaluate John and feel that he will be best set up to succeed through placement with a New Hope partner. We recommend only positive reinforcement-based, force-free training for John as aversive methods are likely to heighten his fear and increase aggression. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: John is extremely nervous around strangers and can be difficult to handle. He has a bite history and shows clear signs of discomfort. It is important to respect those signs and to help John gain comfort and confidence in order to avoid escalation.
