08/26/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: His face is one big golden smile, it measures round at least a mile…Jody’s happy-go-lucky nature shines so brightly that whenever we’re together, this childhood poem plays in my head like a theme song written just for him, a solid gold star in the making. He’s always waiting at the front of his den and greets me affectionately on two legs before dropping back down to four, leashing up without a fuss and making short work of the distance between ‘home’ and yard, tail wagging all the way. Once we hit the street, business is promptly taken care of, and then Jody’s off and pulling again, keen to lose the leash and get jump jump jumpy and snug snug snuggly with anyone lucky enough to share his space. That ear-to-ear smile says it all–come on in, the hugging’s fine! While he does have very high energy levels and can get overexcited and playfully mouthy at times, Jody’s a sweet guy with nothing but love in his heart. Staff raved about how well-behaved and sociable he was when taken out with a novice volunteer group from our corporate outreach program. In playgroup, he’s shown a preference for gentle, social females, and prefers one on one introductions over the free-for-all of a dog run, so while he’d be happy to make some well-mannered new friends, a home where his personal space and softer play style will be recognized and respected is essential. Jody’s still just a teenager, and like most teen boys, he has all the potential in the world and a boundless lust for life. Positively channel that energy with the four T’s (training, treats, toys and teamwork) and I guarantee you’ll be richly rewarded for your efforts with a rock star pet, a lifetime of laughter, and good times being had by all. Jody’s the hidden treasure you never knew your family was missing, and he’s already neutered and ready to leave for home ASAP. Run, don’t walk, to our Manhattan Care Center for a snuggle session with our resident golden boy today!
09/12/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 8/1/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/3/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps up at end. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Jody displayed no concerning behaviors on his assessment and was social throughout. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: Jody has displayed interest in socializing with female dogs in the care center. At times, he has engaged in play with playful female dogs. Jody displayed slight concern when greeting male dogs, stiffening and hard staring. The behavior department feels that based on these observations, Jody may be most compatible with social, female dogs. It is recommended that Jody be introduced to unfamiliar dogs on a one-on-one basis. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Jody was calm. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/1/17 During his initial medical exam, Jody was tense. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Jody so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Jody has been observed to become aroused when being removed and returning to his kennel; reacting towards other dogs. On one occasion, Jody directing his frustration onto a handler, resulting in two punctures on his arm. Due to the level of frustration displayed in shelter, the behavior department recommends Jody move out in an experienced foster home as soon as possible.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_New Hope Only _X_No dog parks: Due to selectiveness when engaging with other dogs, the behavior department recommends that Jody meet dogs in a one on one setting. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Jody jumps up a lot on people at the care center. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Jody has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Jody’s teeth make contact with skin). _X_Bite history: Jody has bitten when frustrated, reporting to hold on. We cannot be certain if this is due to the environment though recommend exercising caution in other stressful situations.
