A Little Bit About Me…
A volunteer writes: Little Jodi was my pearl of the day! A real sweetheart! He was hesitant to come out of his kennel. I had been warned…. Jodi has many sores on his feet, the result of poor housing conditions and has to be handled with care. Of course I will. Our medical staff is also closely attending to him. Jodi wanted nothing less than to lay across my lap, being hugged, petted, talked to and giving back millions of kisses. I knew I had to give him all the love I could to make up for his difficult past life. Jodi was happy, even wagging his tail, taking treats, his beautiful eyes were bright. He must have said to himself, “I am right to have come to this place. I got a safe and clean den to sleep in, good meals, even treats and people to care for me and love me…” Jodi is really cute, very medium size and dressed in a “marron glace” color coat. He is a valiant pup, 1 year old, and makes all efforts to walk around the yard. He even sits on command for me, hoping for more treats. I truly fell in love with this little guy who deserves finally his share of happiness with a caring and loving owner. Come and see him soon at the Manhattan Care Center.
Details on my behavior are…
Date of assessment: 13-May-2018
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. Allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, and tail is in neutral position with a relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 1. Dog follows at the end of the leash, body soft.
Paw squeeze 1: Item not conducted
Paw squeeze 2: Item not conducted
Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all.
Flank squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all.
Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog may smell or lick, then turns away.
Summary: Jodi approached the assessor with a soft body. He was social and calm during the assessment, allowed all handling, and displayed no concerning behaviors.
PLAY GROUP :
Due to arriving as a stray, Jodi’s history around dogs is unknown. Jodi has displayed sudden, rapid escalation when introduced to dogs in the care center. It is unknown how this behavior may translate outside of this environment, however a single dog residence is recommended pending follow up outside of the care center.
5/13: When introduced off leash to the female greeter dog, Jodi is fearful and keeps to himself.
5/15: Jodi initially appears softer and is polite when greeting a group of calm female dogs. After prolonged time, Jodi begins to suddenly hard bark at a select female dog. He then turns and attempts to snap and bite at the flank of another dog in the area. Jodi is removed from the interaction without further incident.
Date of initial: 12-May-2018
Summary: Jodi was active, social, and allowed handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Jodi so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, he displays a medium level of activity.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: AVERAGE (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience)
Recommendations: Single-pet home, Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments: Single pet home/no dog parks: Due to the concerning behavior observed during off leash playgroups, it is recommended Jodi be the only resident dog until his behavior around dogs can be followed up on outside of the shelter environment.
