04/15/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
Jewel was nervous but allowed handling. It’s best to go slow with her.
04/25/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Young Jewel was found giving birth in a yard. Just two puppies were born. She chose, it seems, not to attend to them. Mother dogs can sometimes behave as such and there are many reasons for that. We just have to be forgiving, place the mom in the best conditions for her recovery, spay her and see what kind of dog she really is. Jewel was well named. She is gorgeous, a Labrador Retriever mix with the most shiny ebony coat. She certainly knows how to wear a scarf. Rather skin and bones, with a limp and as hungry as a bear. Jewel is a bit shy, uncomfortable with people and dogs alike. Never did I get a growl from her. She always came to her door, wagging her tail and looking at me very gently. The one time I took her out, she walked well on the leash, even did her business and laid lavishly in the sun while I was seeking shade. She let me caress her. She seemed content and relaxed to be in my company. We do not know much about Jewel but she will soon need your help one way or another. Will you open your door to her, help her with whatever her issues might be as a result of a dismal past and make a beloved pet out of her? Jewel is at the Manhattan Care Center, waiting for her fate to unveil, hopefully a good one, safe in your hands.
04/21/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Jewel walks with a low fearful body language on leash. She was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body, but trying to stay close. Jewel was shy during handling with a fearful body language. She was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Jewel was not interested in toys. She was relaxed when approaching a friendly dog, but was not playful. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter. Jewel is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up to the handler. The behavior department advises that future adopters should be able to provide positive experiences for Jewel. In addition, we recommend that introductions are done slowly, and Jewel be given the opportunity to interact at their own pace. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, shy body language , mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy 1. No interest. Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches helper dog with her body not stiff, neutral tail, ears relaxed, and lip long or neutral. Helper: A1070555
