SAFE 01/16/17

My name is JERMAINE. My Animal ID # is A1099881.

01/02/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Is it shallow of me to say that I fell in love with Jermaine based on just his looks? It is hard not to swoon over his youthful glow, his muscular body, sweet puppy face and bushy tail that anchors his tall legs! He is STUNNING!! His paws might be a little too big for his body, though, giving him a puppy-like gait that’s quite laughable. And he truly is ALL puppy! He LOVES toys, and after waiting most of the afternoon for me to take him out, he did a celebratory zoomie, toy in his mouth, prancing in circles around the yard. He will play a little fetch, or tug but is generally content with just shaking his toy in his mouth, showing it off to passersby and frolicking around with it. Though Jermaine was found as a stray, his finder said that he spent time with his small children with no issues. Jermaine pulls on the leash, but does seem housetrained and eager to relieve himself. Jermaine doesn’t like being returned to his kennel, but I can’t blame him-a young energetic pup deserves tons of play time, more training and lots of love. While I may have initially fallen in love with him for his appearance, it’s clear that beauty is more than skin-deep with Jermaine! Ask to meet him today!

01/14/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Intact, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 12/20/16 Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity:1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag:1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, mouths leash but in a playful manner. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Summary: Jermaine was friendly and very playful towards the assessor, he displayed no behavioral concerns. PLAYGROUP: Jermaine was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Jermaine is slightly nervous but is able to engage in high energy play with male and female dogs. He may mount a female dog but is able to listen to handler interruptions and continues to engage in play. The Behavior Department recommends that Jermaine be placed in a home with a resident dog that matches his play style. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/20/16: During his medical examination, Jermaine was friendly and social, he allowed all handling. IN SHELTER BEHAVIOR: 1/13/14 Recently Jermaine has begun to become difficult to place back into his kennel. When a handler attempts to place him back into his kennel, he mounts the handler and mouths at their clothing, tearing it on several occasions. The Behavior Department believes that due to the stressful nature of the shelter environment, Jermaine’s behavior has begun to deteriorate. At this time, The Behavior Department does not feel that he is a suitable candidate for the adoptions room any longer due to the deleterious affect it is having on his welfare and recommend that placement be sought as soon as possible. ENERGY LEVEL: High RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced dog owner Potential challenges: _x_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended.) _x_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition (See IN SHELTER BEHAVIOR)

12/17/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Jermaine was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Jermaine is slightly nervous but is able to engage in high energy play with male and female dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that Jermaine be placed in a home with a resident dog that matches his play style. 12/17: Jermaine is nervous at first, greeting a novel female dog with a lowered head and tucked tail. He relaxes as the session continues, straitening his posture and untucking his tail as he socializes. By the end of the session, Jermaine engages in and solicits gentle play. 12/18- 1/7: In a group of playful male and female dogs, Jermaine is initially nervous but quickly relaxes. He solicits and engages in gentle play. He may mount a female dog but is able to listen to handler interruptions and corrections from another dog and continues to engage in play. He explores the pen when there is a break in play. 1/10-1/12: Jermaine is utilized as a helper dogs for dogs that engage in high energy, inappropriate play.
