A staff member writes: Jemma is such a wonderful dog. When you pass by her kennel she seems so sad and quiet, but once you bring her out she blossoms into a big, beautiful, joyous girl. During the snowstorm we went out to play and she just had a blast running in the snow and playing “find the tennis ball” in the snow drifts. After coming inside to warm up she settled down with her kong full of peanutbutter, cleaned that out in a heartbeat, and then proceeded to try and fit all 90 pounds of her into my lap! She was so determined! My heart just swells whenever I think about this amazing dog who just wants someone to play and cuddle with her. She needs some training on the leash since she pulls so hard but, for the right person who is committed to work with her, that is such a small price to pay for a friend like her. Please come down to our Manhattan Care Center to meet her today!
A volunteer writes: I’m not sure that I can explain the majesty that is Jemma. I couldn’t capture her beauty on camera so I’m not sure I’ll do better with words. She’s a big girl, but gentle and sweet, giving kisses, playing with a plush toy, taking treats gently and just being a gentle, playful, loving big baby. Her former owner could no longer keep her and she was surrendered with glowing comments about how wonderful she is. We’re told she’s shy at first and needs a little time to warm up to people and that’s exactly how it went. It didn’t take long before Jemma was sitting beside me, giving me kisses, playing with a plush toy and taking some treats after showing me her ‘sit’ and ‘shake’. She’s housetrained (check), crate trained, loves baths and to play in the water, loves children and slept with the kids in the home. She’s shy with other dogs, especially small ones, but had an older brother with whom she played exuberantly. In her first group she walked away from the helper dog but showed no aggression. She’s well behaved when left home alone and in addition to ‘sit’ and ‘shake’ she knows ‘come’, ‘rollover’, ‘down’ and ‘play dead’. Jemma pulls a bit on the leash, was shyly friendly to people who wanted to meet her on the street and is a total delight. Shy, gorgeous, sweet, affectionate, playful and so easy to be with, without meaning to I saved the best for my last walk of the day. I ADORED this shy but friendly girl who gives soft kisses and you will too. Come meet her today.
