09/03/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Introducing el mejor adolescent…JEFE! He’s still learning the ropes as far as housetraining (but definitely tries to keep his cage clean!), that trash on the ground isn’t treasure in plain sight, and that furniture isn’t for chewing when nobody’s watching, but this guy is so much fun! He was super friendly when I met him and we’re told he likes to greet new people with kisses. He previously lived with a Pomeranian and has been excited and wiggly when we’ve met dogs through a fence. He is treat motivated and already knows “sit” and “down.” He LOVES toys and is very endearing as he plays with them by himself, teases me with them, and manages to carry multiple at once. He does get jumpy and mouthy (light), but I think it’s his way of saying “I like you so much I could eat you up!” The feeling is mutual, Jefe! Please come meet him at Brooklyn ACC…you’ll make his day!
08/24/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Jefe is a ten month old dog being surrendered to our care centers as his owner no longer has time to care for him. Jefe has been around children aged twelve and up, friendly and excitable around them, engaging in play. He is known to jump and to greet people in a friendly manner. Jefe has never been exposed to cats though has lived with a Pomeranian who he enjoyed playing with. Jefe has no known behavior issues, though it has been noted that when left alone, he will chew on furniture. Jefe is not yet fully house trained according to the owner and will still have accidents in the home. Jefe is described as playful, excitable and affectionate. During intake, Jefe was friendly, jumping up to greet the counselor and allowed all handling to be conducted. During SAFER Jefe came into the assessment room very loose and wiggly, he was friendly and playful but can be rough when play and mouthy. He allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Jefe joins the game during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Jefe was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Due to Jefe being rough and mouthy when playing with high energy, the behavior department feels he can be suitable for an experience adopter with no young children. Look: 2. 08/23/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
According to Jefe’s previous owner, Jefe has lived with a Pomeranian. They both play together and chase each other around the house. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Jefe initally displayed conflicting body langauge, play bowing and lip curling at the same time. During his second playgroup sessions, Jefe shows barrier frustration by barking and muzzle punching the gate when greeting the other dog. He is able relax and is allowed to enter the pen. He is able to calmly wander in the pen before rushing and body slamming the female dog. He is persistently sexually motivated, licking the female’s genital area after she offers correction and the handlers interrupt. He offers play bows and displays bouncy body language but seems to become frustrated when play is not reciprocated. The Behavior Department believes that Jefe would be most comfortable as the only dog in the home. If Jefe is to be placed with other dogs, Jefe should have adequate time to decompress from the shelter environment and all dog play sessions should be supervised and contain well-socialized, tolerant dogs. 8/23: Jefe displays conflicting body language while greeting the other dog through the gate. He play bows but begins lip curling and muzzle punching the gate. Due to the reactivity Jefe displayed, a muzzled was placed on him before being allowed into the pen.
