04/25/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Sweet little Jean could be the poster dog for the joys of loving an older pet and she’s certainly the most beautiful senior I’ve ever met–if this is what middle age looks like then sign me up! Her soulful face could launch a thousand ‘awwws’ and her gentle manners steal a million hearts but the only people she ever tried to impress were her life-long family so without them she’s feeling a bit uncertain of her place in the world. Jean’s not a fan of other dogs but enjoys making new human friends and is working hard to put her best paw forward at the Care Center, leashing up easily and trotting along contentedly as we stroll toward the park. She thoroughly sniffs everything, takes care of her business promptly and mostly ignores the other pups that pass by and once we reach our destination she’s happy to sit on request before ever so softly taking some treats as a reward. Food is definitely a big motivator for Jean and apparently she’ll even ‘counter surf’ for leftovers if given the chance! We’re told she’s spent time around children of all ages and tolerates them touching her up to a point but prefers the company of calmer adults who’ll snuggle in the soft way she likes. While she did live with another dog, Jean hasn’t developed the social skills to accept strange pups into her circle and will react strongly if they approach too close and cats are a definite no-no; she may be getting up there in years but she’s still spry enough to chase them! Cool with baths and grooming (which explains her beautiful coat), playful but never hyper, crate trained and well behaved; Jean has all the ingredients to make a wonderful companion as loving, laid back and mature in spirit as she is. Come meet this super senior Señorita at our Manhattan Care Center today!
04/23/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full Profile 4/21/17 Unaltered Female, Owner Surrender (In previous home for ten years) Previously lived with: Adults, children (ages two months, two years, seven years, and eleven years), and another dog. Behavior toward strangers: Friendly Behavior toward children: Ignores them and will show teeth if they touch her ears or face Behavior toward dogs: Respectful and tolerant of the dog she lived with. She will get stiff and lunge at dogs he sees on walks. Behavior toward cats: Chases them Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Jean is described as having a medium level of activity. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 4/23/17 Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still with eyes averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Jean displayed no concerning behaviors on her assessment and allowed all handling. PLAYGROUP: 4/26: Due to Jean’s barrier reactivity, she is muzzled for the off leash interaction. She greets with an extremely stiff body, and high pulsing tail. She sniffs the greeting dog briefly but remains stiff throughout the entire interaction. Due to limited interaction, the behavior department recommends allowing Jean time to decompress in a home before follow up or future introductions are conducted. Her previous owner described her as “relaxed and tolerant” with the other dog in the home, though also mentions that Jean would become tense and lunge at other dogs on outdoor walks. Future introductions should be conducted slowly to respectful dogs, and Jean should be allowed to interact at her own pace. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/21/17 During her initial medical exam, Jean allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Jean’s previous owner described her as having a medium level of activity.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No children (under 13): Due to her history of showing teeth when children touch her face or ears, we recommend an adult only home. _X_No cats: Due to her history of chasing cats, we recommend a home without cats. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Jean’s previous owner reported she will show teeth when children touch her, demonstrating fearful behavior towards children. It is important to always go slow and give Jean the option to walk away from any social interaction. Jean should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Jeans’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Jean would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Jean’s previous owner reported that she lunges at dogs she sees outside. Jean may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
