Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 9/22/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 9/25/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Jcole was mouthy during his assessment, applying light pressure. He allowed all handling and was social. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: When off leash at the Care Center, Jcole is hyper-motivated, and is sexually motivated. He rushes other dogs, ignoring their uncomfortability and lunges at another male. Jcole was surrender as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Jcole be placed in a home with female dogs that will be tolerant of his sexually motivated behavior. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Jcole was growling in his crate but once out he had a loose body. He head flipped when touched and allowed limited handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/23/17 During his initial medical exam, Jcole was tense and active. He growled when he was attempted to be picked up. IN SHELTER BEHAVIOR: 9/27/17 Since Jcole arrived at the Care Center, he has displayed concerning kennel presence when approached by staff. He hard stares, growls and hard barks and has not responded to drive-by treating. Due to this behavior, the Behavior Team does not feel he is a suitable candidate for the adoptions room. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Jcole so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially in the behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to mouthiness displayed at the care center and potential handling sensitivity, we recommend a home without young children. Potential challenges: _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Jcole has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Jcole’s teeth make contact with skin). _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Jcole has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times, head flipping at intake and growling during his medical exam when lifted. It is important to always go slow and give Jcole the option to walk away from any social interaction. Jcole should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Jcole’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Jcole may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
