07/01/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Some people go through life making very small waves. Others are like rapids and cascades, firm believers that life has to be lived to its full potential. This is our Jazz…a magnificent, boisterous, strong and enthusiastic young man–a tiger brindle. Jazz is a friendly character. Appear at his door and he will rush to meet you, kissing your hand through the bars. Take me out, take me out. Sure, but not without a harness, or Jazz will send you flying in the air. He loves people, and he surprises them with sudden jumps and a kiss that will land anywhere on a human face. Needless to say that whoever adopts Jazz will have to curb this endearing but startling habit. Jazz is at his best when leash-free in the yard. No need to push and pull anymore. He likes to sniff the scents left by other dogs, hop on the bench, observe the premises and just be caressed. He does not mind a scarf around his neck and the eye of my camera. He can sit on command (not all the time), takes treats gently and just enjoys his freedom. Jazz is a gorgeous, active, powerful, sociable and friendly young guy who would love to be part of your family, be your student (yes, he needs to be taught proper leash manners and boundaries), and beloved forever four-legged friend. Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care Center.
06/29/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 6/28/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 6/29/17 Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, panting, jumps up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game. He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 3. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff. Summary: Jazz displayed a high level of activity and movement on his assessment, jumping up on the assessor repeatedly and very hard. His body stiffened when he was in possession of the toy. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 6/28: When introduced off leash to dogs in the care center Jazz is polite and tolerant of approach. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Jazz allowed handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/28/17 During his initial medical exam, Jazz was tense and active. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Jazz so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center he has been active and enthusiastic. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No children (under 13): Due to the high level of hard jumping up on people Jazz displays, as well as his potential for resource guarding, we recommend an adult only home. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: Jazz displayed a potential for resource guarding, stiffening when the toy he was in possession of was touched. For this reason we advise against ever removing items from Jazz’s possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Jazz has displayed that he will jumps up high and hard on people at the care center. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Strength/leash pulling: Jazz is a very large, strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
