12/28/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
12/28/16 19:21 Basic information: Jax a roughly 4 yr. old Lab mix was brought in as owner surrender. The Owner got him from breeder; he has owned Jax for over 3 yrs. The owner surrendered Jax because Jax’s behavior has become unpredictable around others in the home (Jax tries to bite when touched on certain parts of the body). Jax has never been taken to a vet. Socialization: Around strangers Jax is very tense and nervous. Jax has lived with a 1 year old child but the owner normal keeps Jax away from him. Jax does not like other dogs and will bark at them and may try to charge at them. Jax has bitten the owner’s wife on the arm but did not break skin (Ten days prior to surrender due her touching Jax on his back). Behavior: The owner stats that Jax is not bothered when some moves his food or treats while he is eating, when someone takes his toys away or when someone disturbs him while sleeping. Jax does not like to be touch on his lower back or paws, he will bite the person attempting to do so. When an unfamiliar person or animal approaches a family member or his home he barks at them. The owner does not know how Jax is around loud noises such as storms or fireworks. For a new family to know: The owner describes Jax as shy but friendly and playful with a high activity level. His favorite activity is to play fetch with his owner. In the home Jax tends to follow the owner around the house and is kept mainly indoors. Jax sleeps in the floor of the bedroom on a dog bed. Jax was fed Pedigree dry and wet dog food once a day. He is house trained and has never had an accident in the home, when outside he goes to the bathroom on or around trees and grass. Jax knows the commands “sit “and “Come”. For exercise Jax is used to brisk walks on the leash and twice a day and does not pull on the leash. Behavior during intake: Jax was very tense with stiff body, when approached by staff Jax growled at the staff member but allowed slow approach,(another dog came into the shelter and the two almost got into a fight) the owner was able to assist us, scanned (+), collared, photographing and placing in dog kennel.

12/30/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Neutered, owner surrender Previously lived with: Adults, a child (1 year old) Behavior toward children: Unknown (the owner kept the child away from Jax) Behavior toward dogs: Jax will bark at other dogs and may try to charge at them. Behavior toward cats: Unknown FG/RG: None reported Bite history: Yes. Jax bit the owner’s wife’s arm when she touched him on the back. The bite did not break skin. Jax is also reported to snap or bite when touched on the lower back or on his paws. Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Jax is described as shy but friendly and playful with a high activity level. Other notes: During intake, Jax was very tense with stiff body, growled at admissions counselor. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 12/30/2016 Summary: Jax initially appeared soft inside kennel, but once approached lunged and quickly snapped. He is not a candidate for a SAFER assessment at this time. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Jax bounces around when solicited with play. He at times attempts to mount. He does bark and growl at a larger, male dog through a fence when greeting. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/29/2016 Jax was tense and nervous during his initial medical exam, but he did allow all restraint and handling. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to Jax’s bite history and his handling sensitivity, we recommend an adult-only home for Jax. _X_Place with a New Hope partner Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Jax may benefit from a slow introduction with minimal invasive up-close handling, allowing him to approach at his own pace. He has a previous bite history and several handling-related triggers. _X_ Handling sensitivity: Jax is sensitive to being touched on certain parts of his body and gives high-level warnings including biting.
12/29/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Jax engages in bouncy, running play with female dogs (he has not yet been introduced off-leash to a male dog) that may lead to him eventually attempting to mount. His owner reports he “does not like other dogs and will bark at them and may try to charge at them.” Based on this as well as observations seen at the care center the behavior department feels that Jax could have slow, structured introductions to any resident dogs but any potential adopter should be aware of possible leash/barrier reacitivity Jax may exhibit once outside of the care center. 12/29: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Jax bounces around when solicited with play. He at times attempts to mount. He does bark and growl at a larger, unaltered male dog through a fence when greeting. 12/30: Jax engages in rough play with a female dog. He may attempt to mount her but will begin to play again once solicited. He greets dogs (male and female) in an adjacent pen with soft body, a quick sniff and then walks away.
